On the final day of our short stay in Liverpool, we took a trip on Merseyrail out to New Brighton; a place I have visited since I went with Andy back in 2012. After a walk on the prom. we took lunch (in Morrisons of all places!) and returned back to Liverpool James Street station.

508117, MR 11.16 New Brighton-New Brighton (2N17, 2E), Liverpool Central station
Deep under Liverpool's streets are the Wirral Line platforms at Central station. 508117 arrives at the station working the 11.16 New Brighton circular return service that my wife and I took to its destination with us first plunging ever deeper underground so as to pass under the Mersey. Notice the other day-trippers on the platform waiting to board the train also hoping for a day (or afternoon by now!) on the sands at New Brighton.

230008, stabled, Birkenhead North TMD
On passing Birkenhead North Merseyrail depot I was surprised to see one of Transport for Wales' Vivarail hybrid units stabled in full view. These units have been undergoing testing and training on the borders line towards Wrexham for some time now. 230008 is seen awaiting its next test run and hopefully, it will be entering service with TfW soon.

The Class 507 units were introduced between 1978 and 1980 ousting the venerable LMS Class 502 and 503s. However, time has now been called on the new units now being over forty years old with the imminent introduction to service of the Class 777 Stadler units, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29021665404/x777004-02-44-dollands-moor-kirkdale 507005 stands stabled in one of the sidings at New Brighton station.

507028, ME 14.56 New Brighton-New Brighton (2N28, 1E), New Brighton station
After a walk on the prom, ice cream and a little light lunch on New Brighton's front my wife and I returned to Liverpool. We travelled in 507028 that is seen waiting at New Brighton to work Merseyrail's 14.56 return working. Notice the extensive work being undertaken by Amco Giffen on behalf of Merseyrail to the roof of New Brighton station. It likes like this work should be extended to the art deco concrete platform canopy that was showing some serious signs of decay due to the rusting of the reinforcing rebar causing the concrete to flake away thus exacerbating the situation.

Tickets, Liverpool Central-New Brighton-Liverpool James Street
With our two together discount the off-peak return from Liverpool Central to New Brighton was excellent value at £2.85 each. The trains, despite their age, were clean and not at all crowded making my wife and I feel 'Covidly comfortable'. On our return journey, we alighted at Liverpool's James Street station for a short walk through the Liverpool One shopping centre to return to our hotel.
