The final journey of our grand day out around the West Midlands was on another Desiro from Rugby back to Northampton. Unlike some of our other journeys during the day, this was uneventful with an on-time arrival.

221102 & 221103, VT 18.30 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B80, 4L), Rugby station
Having travelled from Birmingham on the 18.30 service to London Euston it leaves Rugby station with 221102 bringing up the rear with 221103 leading upfront. Whilst I am not a fan of the Voyagers my travelling companion, Andy, likes them lauding their acceleration and ambience; there's no accounting for folk!

221108 & 221115, VT 18.23 London Euston-Shrewsbury (9J38, 1E), Rugby station
The 18.23 Euston to Shrewsbury Avanti Voyager service passes through Rugby at line speed in the evening sun. It is services such as this that will be operated by Avanti's new bi-mode trains that are to be introduced into service next year with these diesel units being retired from WCML duties and not before time!

NB on re-reading this just a week before the start of 2024 I can report that despite testing and mileage accumulation runs that the Class 805s have yet to enter service!

350234, LN 18.53 Birmingham New Street-Northampton (2Y14, 1E), Rugby station
London Northwestern's 350234 arrives at Rugby station working the 2Y14 18.53 Birmingham New Street to Northampton station. I would not normally include such a dreadful photograph taken directly into the evening sunshine but its omission would break my rule of having an image of every train that I travel on. Andy and I took this train back home to Northampton as the final leg of our West Midlands Day Ranger.

Journey score 7/10

66606, 19.56 Northampton Castle Yard-Tunstead Sidings (6Z99, RT) Northampton Spencer Road bridge
A pretty awful picture taken from a moving train but the subject is interesting so worthy of inclusion for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have never managed any photographs of the evening Northampton Castle Yard to Tunstead empty stone wagons due to its inconvenient timings and that it heads north away from Northampton away from my home location. The second reason is that 66606 is a photographic cop; my second of the day. The Class 66 is seen slowly reversing the stock away from Castle Yard under Northampton's Spencer Road bridge. The locomotive will then run round the stock and head off north back to Derbyshire.

Tickets, West Midlands Ranger
Our pair of West Midland Day Ranger tickets looking a little crumpled but having been well used throughout the day. The cost us £19 each and we travelled exactly three hundred miles from start to finish. However, taking out the two journeys not valid on the tickets takes the total down to two hundred and forty-eight miles equating to 7.6 pence/mile that is not bad value really!
