To get to Shrewsbury we wanted to travel on a Transport for Wales Rail Services. We travelled from Wolverhampton aboard an elderly Class 150 that, dating from 1984, made it by far the oldest train that we travelled on during the day.

350256, LN 11.22 Birmingham New Street-Crewe (2K48, 2L) & 221133, XC 10.27 Manchester Piccadilly-Reading (1O14, 1E), Wolverhampton station
A busy scene at Wolverhampton station. With a London bound Pendolino to the far side CrossCountry's 221113 leaves working the 1O14 10.27 Manchester to Reading service. In the foreground 350256 waits to leave working the 11.22 New Street to Crewe local stopper. For such a busy and principal station I find Wolverhampton a cramped place that seems to be in a perpetual state of construction or alteration. That was no exception on the day of our visit with the entrance area being re-built.

150235, AW 11.06 Birmingham New Street-Holyhead (1D13, 4E), Wolverhampton station
The next train of our West Midlands foray arrives at Wolverhampton station. We travelled aboard a crowded 11.06 Birmingham New Street to Holyhead as far as Shewsbury being worked by 150235 and another one attached to the rear. The elderly unit, dating from 1984, arrives at Wolverhampton still wearing its ATW livery. Boarding one of these trains now feels like travelling in a previous era with more modern trains now being so much better in every respect. This service was crowded and felt a little uncomfortable as the COVID guidelines were difficult to adhere to. Andy and I were forced to sit in the small single seats adjacent to the lavatory. Interestingly, the WiFi worked well throughout the journey but it was still somewhat of a relief to reach Shrewsbury and I certainly would not have fancied continuing on to its destination all the way to Anglesey!

Journey score 5/10
