Some Sunday engineering work was taking place on the slow lines close to home in Roade. This included a ballaster taking several hours to do its work making a repetitive suite of noises that carried across the field to home for the bulk of the day! The closure of the line meant some freight diversions were planned; in the event, only one actually ran in daylight hours. And yes, of course, it was a cloudy day with rain spoiling play!

DR73929, ballasting & 390153, VT 10.19 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H05, 15L), Victoria bridge
Colas 08-4x4/4S-RT switch and crossing tamper DR73929 does its work near Victoria bridge (just south of Roade) whilst the adjacent fast lines remain open. One of the operators of the tamper is seen climbing down from the front cab to observe its operation as it passes by very close to one of two concrete culvert covers both previously marked with a white stripe of paint. The Avanti West Coast train is the 10.19 Euston to Manchester service worked by 390153.

66430, 10.51 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L98, RT), Victoria bridge
Having first headed north from Daventry's rail freight terminal as far as Rugby it is now seen heading in the right direction again working the 4L98 Tesco Express to Purfleet. The reason for this odd move was the closure of the slow lines south of Northampton so it was forced to take the 'fast' Weedon route. With DRS' 66430 leading the train it is seen sweeping around the reverse curves just south of Roade identified by the water tower in the top right of the photograph.

DR73929, ballasting & 10.51 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L98, RT), Victoria bridge
As the diverted 10.51 Daventry to Ripple Lane 'Tesco Express' heads south on the up fast the cause of the diversion is in view. Colas tamper DR73929 goes about its work re-ballasting the up slow line. During the is process it makes painfully slow progress along the track at what is considerably less than walking pace and making a fair bit of noise as it does so! The photograph is taken from Victoria bridge located just south of Roade in Northamptonshire.

86259, 12.20 Acton Lane-Rugby CS (0Z88, 18L), site of Roade station
Still wearing its headboard from yesterday's railtour duties (see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30014872866/x86259-cumbrian-mountain-express) 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' heads north past Roade heading back to its weekday base in some overgrown sidings at Rugby. Running as the 0Z88 12.20 Acton to Rugby it was fairly late due to a delayed departure. Notice that the rain has started again after what had been a pleasantly dry but cloudy Sunday morning.
