Revisiting another of my old haunts found me around Fairwood Junction just to the west of Westbury. I cannot remember the last time I was actually at the junction but it is getting on for forty years ago! It was interesting that I noticed what I believed to be the beginning of the Class 800 Azuma/IET debacle unfolding as all up trains were suddenly passing at a reduced speed and all arriving late by about the same amount of time. I wondered if the cracking issue has been identified and that instructions were passed to drivers via their GSMR 'phones with them being told to reduce speed. This was, of course, about ten hours prior to all the sets being taken ignominiously out of service and it being splashed across the media; what a shambles!

66622, 11.20 Allington-Whatley (6V18, 5E), Fairwood Junction
With the northern escarpment of Salisbury Plain and the famous Westbury white horse in the background, 66622 leads the 11.20 Allington to Whatley empty stone train past Fairwood Junction. Back in my teenage spotting days here at Fairwood Junction, a freight would rarely be seen on the 'cut off' with it reserved for fast express services not stopping at Westbury headed by Westerns and Class 50s.

802113, GW 14.37 London Paddington-Penzance (1C86, 1E), Fairwood Junction
GWR's 802113 is about to rejoin the mainline as it heads west at Fairwood Junction near Westbury. The IET is seen a burst of welcome if a little weak afternoon sunshine on a chilly May day working the 1C86 14.37 Paddington to Penzance service. It felt very strange being back at this location over forty years since I had last visited it. Apart from some vegetation growth and the loss of the semaphores, this view is essentially the same as it was then, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25468144004/x50013-13-30-london-paddington-penzance

802114, GW 14.12 Paignton London Paddington (1A87, 9L), Fairwood Junction
Now running at a much-reduced speed (or so it appeared) 802114 crosses Fairwood Junction near Westbury with the 1A87 14.12 Paignton to Paddington service. I deliberately took this photograph at a slightly wider angle than I would normally have chosen in an attempt to replicate an image captured forty-three years ago, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25468143604/x47463-not-47460-13-20-weymouth-bristol

800309, GW 12.15 Penzance-London Paddington (1A88, 9L), Fairwood Junction
Great Western IET 800309 takes the Westbury avoider or 'cut off' as it is colloquially referred to passing Fairwood Junction. Rather than running at line speed, the 12.15 Penzance to Paddington appeared to at a reduced speed and indeed, looking at RTT revealed that it had been slowed at Castle Cary and that it then ran at what appeared to be deliberately late all the way to the capital. This was in common with all other up express services; perhaps a warning had been issued to drivers about the underframe cracking issues that led to the entire withdrawal of the fleet the following day?

Having left the mainline at Fairwood Junction about a third of a mile beyond the bridge 166204 'Norman Topson MBE' heads towards Westbury station working the 14.55 Weymouth to Gloucester GWR service. This very smartly repainted unit is adorned with a large vinyl imitation nameplate that commemorates the work of the long-serving railwayman that worked at Twyford station. Known as 'Mr Twyford' he retired in November 2015 after 53 years of service on the railways.

802111, GW 15.38 Exeter St. David's-London Paddington (1A81, 21L), Fairwood ST851513
Under a very stormy looking sky that was a precursor to some foul and wet weather later in the day, 802211 takes the Westbury route at Fairwood Junction just west of the Wiltshire town. The Great Western Railway IET was running at a reduced speed since Castle Cary, along with all other services, arriving twenty-one minutes adrift at Paddington working the 15.38 from Exter St. David's. I believe that this was a result of control informing drivers via GSMR of the identification of the cracking to the underframes that caused the temporary withdrawal of the entire fleet a few hours after this picture was taken.

802109, GW 15.14 Plymouth-London Paddington (1A19, 15L), Fairwood ST851510
The rear of the 15.14 Plymouth to Paddington 1A19 service takes the Westbury cut off avoiding the town's station worked by GWR IET 802109. It is seen near the village of Fairwood that gives its name to the nearby junction. In common with all other GWR services worked by the IETs on this Friday afternoon, it was running at a reduced speed with it arriving at Paddington fifteen minutes late.

59001, 14.39 Acton-Whatley (6C76, 18E), Frome North Parade bridge
Pioneer 59001 'Yeoman Endeavour ' passes through Frome with the 14.39 Acton to Whatley 6C76 stone empties. Notice that this Class 59 carries a bell that was fitted when the locomotive was named in a ceremony at Merehead quarry on 28.06.86 to celebrate the entry to service as one of the initial batch of three locomotives following exhaustive testing and driver training. Back then, little did we know what a profound impact these North American built locomotives would have on our railways. Whilst this looks to be a quiet and rural spot the photograph is taken from the very busy North Parade road bridge close to Frome's town centre.
