70014, 15.12 Ipswich-Crewe Basford Hall (4M41), Roade Cutting
I have commented on the design of the Class 70s before but even from this elevated angle, I think that they remain one of the ugliest locomotives on the network! Freightliner's 70014 leads the 15.12 Ipswich (originating at Felixstowe) to Crewe Basford Hall service noisily through Roade cutting.

Class 221, VT 17.43 London Euston-Preston (9P95), Roade cutting
A Virgin Voyager passes through Roade cutting working the 17.43 Euston to Preston 9P45 train. Without wishing to bore my readers I am going to repeat my request for information as to why thirsty and dirty diesels are restored to operate under the wires for the entire length of their journey.

66743, 14.33 Garston Car Terminal-Dagenham Docks (6L48), Roade cutting
The 14.33 Garston car terminal to Dagenham docks empty car transporter makes its way through Roade cutting. Along with the European cargo wagons, these cartic wagons are extremely noisy when being hauled empty. GBRf's 66743 is hauling the 6L48 train that will be a relatively easy task being unloaded.

46233, return leg of The Midlander, 17.43 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Z87), Roade cutting
After its outward non-stop run from Birmingham to Euston in the morning, 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' returns hauling The Midlander charter. This time there was no non-stop target so it travelled at a more leisurely pace and a different route. Whereas in the morning it took the direct route from New Street via International and Coventry on the return it went via the Trent Valley route to set down at Nuneaton and Coleshill. With a fin display of exhaust, the LMS Princess Coronation Class passes through Roade cutting, something that she will have done many times during her use on the network between 1938 and 1964.

D1755, return leg of The Midlander, 17.43 London Euston-Birmingham New Street(1Z87) & 350103, LM 17.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W24), Roade cutting
As The Midlander disappears through Roade cutting with D1755 dead in tow on the rear London Midland's 350103 works the 17.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston. Out of sight on the front of the charter is 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' leading the return leg of the charter from Euston to Birmingham New Street.
