16. A morning of freight-13.04.21

An hour or so early in the morning on a bright but very cold morning yielded six freight workings and the late running Sleeper. After capturing everything I went home for tea and toast. What a great way to start a day!

92014, CS 01.29 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (1M16, 15L), site of Roade station
Something had obviously gone wrong earlier in its journey as the up sleeper (along with its down twin the only two operating during the COVID 19 pandemic) was twenty minutes late as it passed the site of Roade station. I am not sure if 92014 had led the train all the way as it was listed on RTT as having a diesel at Edinburgh and it went 'off course' between Goldbourne Junction and Crewe. Arrival into Euston was fifteen minutes adrift.

90003 & 90045, 02.50 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 54E) site of Raode station
As the fast lines around Weedon (as opposed through Northampton) were a little quieter due to the seventy-five per cent COVID timetable and that the train was 'super power' hauled signallers send the 4M45 02.50 Felixstowe to Garston Freightliner on that route. Leading this train is former Greater Anglia 90003 that was named 'Raedwald of East Anglia' and was seen a number of times in its previous life, for example, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29996910004/x90003-06-48-norwich-london-liverpool Freightliner stalwart 90045 is tucked in second but is unfortunately partially obscured by the electrification mast due to the cramped positioning of the photograph.

90013 & 90007, 21.34 Coatbridge-Felixstowe North (4L89, RT), Ashton Road bridge
Not a great photograph but this was not where I had intended to take it. The higher speed of AC powered Freightliner services caught me out as I had intended to be further on but heard the train emerging out of Roade cutting before I had reached my intended spot! Former Greater Anglia 90013 and 90007 'Sir John Betjeman' lead the 4L89 21.34 Coatbridge to Felixstowe Freightliner service seen emerging from the Ashton to Roade bridge in Northamptonshire. It is interesting to note that Freightliner has chosen to keep the names of some of their recently aquired GA electric locomotives that are not specific to their former operating area.

66741, 03.10 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M21, 5E), Ashton Road bridge
Unfortunately, the sun has again dived behind some troublesome cloud weakening the cold early morning light somewhat. 66741 'Swanage Railway' approaches Roade leading GBRf's operated 4M21 03.10 Felixstowe to Trafford Park service. With the hawthorn (Crataegus) in full flower, it can only be early spring but on this particular morning, it did not feel spring-like due to it being particularly cold!

66545, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, 6E), between Roade & Ashton
After standing in full sun for the last ten minutes or so as the 4L52 03.39 Garston to London gateway approached cloud partially covered it! 66545 leads the train through the Northamptonshire countryside between Roade and Ashton.

66528, 06.00 Crewe Basford Hall-Felixstowe North (4L41, 7L), Roade Hill
66528 'Carlisle Eden Mind' leads the 06.00 Crewe Basford Hall to Felixstowe Freightliner between Roade and Ashton in Northamptonshire. I was a little luckier with the lighting on this occasion with the subject and the background just in sunshine but the foreground in shade.

66415, 03.00 Felixstowe North-East Midlands Gateway (44E), between Roade & Ashton
On the walk home across the fields, the final freight of this hour out was seen heading north. 66415 'You Are Never Alone' in its Freightliner-Genesee & Wyoming livery as applied to a number of the Class 66s. Once again, the sun has not played ball with the fields in the background bathed in the morning light but the foreground and the train in semi-shade!
