11. A Sunday afternoon variety-14.03.21

A particularly cold Sunday afternoon with a keen north-westerly blowing did not deter me from taking my camera on my daily walk. I am glad that I did as I managed my first photograph of one of the Class 730 Aventra units on test. These will soon become a common sight on the route through Roade superseding a number of the Class 350s.

66727, 08.50 Alexandra Palace-Bescot Down sidings (9G63, RT), Victoria bridge
My quest to photograph all six of the Maritime liveried and named Class 66s continues! With a number of photographs 'in the bag' of 66727 'Maritime One' today would disappoint again! The 66 leads the 08.50 Alexandra Palace to Bescot engineering train past Victoria bridge just south of Roade. Notice the Pendolino bearing down on the train.

66713, 08.50 Alexandra Palace-Bescot Down sidings (9G63, RT), Victoria bridge
Dead in tow, 66713 'Forest City' sits at the rear of the 08.50 Alexandra Palace to Bescot engineering train as it passes Victoria bridge just a short distance south of Roade. The train is composed of a mixture of infrastructure wagons including MRA and YWA with single examples of an IEA, JNA, OCA and OBA.

66424, 13.09 DIRFT-Tilbury (4L48, RT), Ashton Road bridge
With the recent embankment work in sharp focus and the subject slightly blurred, this is the new scene at Ashton Road bridge between the villages of Roade and Ashton in Northamptonshire. In the background, 66424 again hauls the 4L48 13.09 Daventry to Tilbury 'Tesco Express'. I have many pictures of this DRS liveried Class 66 with the majority of them showing it hauling this particular working!

350265 & 350264, LN 14.25 Northampton-London Euston (2Y10, RT), A508 bridge
Over the coming few months the members of the Class 350/2 subset of this highly successful and reliable Desiro family of trains will end their time on the WCML as the Class 730s are introduced. Still wearing their London Midland livery from a number of years ago, sequentially numbered 350265 and 350264 pass through Roade working the 14.25 Northampton to London Euston 2Y10 service. With them soon to come off lease there appears to be no operator ready to take the Desiros on so they face an uncertain future.

730002, 12.37 Crewe CS-London Euston (5Q43?, 3E), A508 bridge
The shape of things to come! Brand new and out of the box, 730002 takes a test run along a quiet WCML from Crewe to Euston on a Sunday afternoon. This three-car unit will be one of those that will work around the Greater Birmingham area replacing the Class 323s. On the section of line south of Northampton, there will be forty-five five-car units in operation that will not wear this rather garish West Midlands Trains' livery. The Class 730s are the first members of the Aventra family to feature end gangway connecting doors that do not really spoil their looks too much.
