A beautiful spring Sunday coincided with a rare freight diversion. Normally, the 6Z38 Halewood to Southampton loaded car train went via the GWR route through Banbury and Oxford to Reading. However, today it was coming our way via the WCML.

221108, VT 15.33 Chester-London Euston (1A51), Roade Hill
The 15.33 Chester to Euston Virgin West Coast train seeds past Roade hill being worked by Voyager 221108 'Sir Ernest Shackleton'. The installation of the dreaded palisade fencing last autumn has really spoilt this spot that now requires the use of a ladder to elevate the camera above and beyond the fencing.

350125 & 350106, LM 14.33 Crewe-London Euston (1U36), Roade Hill
The 14.33 Crewe to Euston 1U36 takes the up slow past Roade formed by London Mildand's 350125 and 350106. On a week day this train would be formed of one unit and would go via the fast (Weedon) line but not at weekends. Notice the oil seed rape just coming into flower soon to completely carpet the fields with their bright yellow colouring.

390050, VT 15.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A52), Roade Hill
With Roade's water tower clearly visible through the gargantuan gantry that holds just two colour lights for the up slow and fast lines Virgin's 390050 leads the 1A52 15.35 Manchester to Euston service. Even using the zoon lens at this location it has proved impossible to crop out the recently installed palisade fencing.

66171, 13.26 Halewood (Jaguar Cars)-Southampton Eastern Docks (6Z38), Roade Hill
With a very poor and patchy paint job on its roof panel, 66171 passes Roade Hill on the WCML between Northampton and Milton Keynes. The Class 66 is hauling a train that is 'off route' being the 6Z38 13.26 Halewood to Southampton car train. This freight flow that conveys Jaguar cars for export normally goes via the Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford and Reading route but due to engineering works this line was closed.

390157 'Chad Varah' is the final Pendolino of the set and was the last one to enter service two years ago in 2012 as an extended twelve car set. It is seen passing Roade Hill in south Northamptonshire working the 1B53 16.30 Birmingham New Street to Euston Virgin Trains service.
