After taking our usual bike ride to Holt I nipped out to a spot near to Sheringham Golf Course that I have wanted to visit for a while.

8572, 09.45 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling bank
With hardly a wisp of exhaust former LNER B12 8572 makes easy work of Kelling bank leading the Poppy Line's 09.45 Sheringham to Holt train. This spot has recently been opened up as volunteers have been involved in a lot of lineside clearance in the vicinity largely to combat fire risk in the summer months rather than to please photographers!

2. 8572, 10.30 Holt-Sheringham, Wind Pump crossing
Having run to Holt station on the North Norfolk Railway a little earlier, 8572 is seen returning tender first with the return 10.30 service to Sheringham. This is a fairly quiet and remote spot on Kelling Heath called Wind Pump crossing. The crossing is just to my right and is popular with cyclists and walkers alike.

76034 (76084), 10.30 Sheringham-Holt, Wind Pump crossing
Having passed the 10.30 from Holt at Weybourne station 76084 (carrying the inauthentic 76034 number) brings the 10.30 from Weybourne past Wind Pump crossing on Kelling Heath. This is another example of a steam locomotive producing very little exhaust on this day with weather conditions conspiring against me coming up with a more dramatic photograph! Notice the recently cut embankments as this is a favourite area during the summer season for fires caused by hard-working locomotives producing many smuts and sparks.

8572, 12.00 Holt-Sheringham, Holt station
On arrival at Holt station on our bikes, we had a short break and visited the small and unstaffed bookshop. Whilst we were there LNER B12 8572 was in the station preparing to leave with the 12.00 to Sheringham.

8572, 15.00 Holt-Sheringham, Sheringham Golf Course West crossing TG137432
After we had got back from our bike ride to Holt, I took the car out to a spot that I had always wanted to visit just west of Sheringing on the opposite side of the line to the golf course. Whilst B12 8572 is leading the 15.00 Holt to Sheringham tender first that is not my favourite view I like the lighting and the furrows in the sandy field that run parallel with the line.

8572, 15.45 Sheringham-Holt, Sheringham Golf Course West crossing TG137432
Having had a pretty quick run round at Sheringham station some mile or so from this location just across the line from the town's golf course B12 8572 gets into its stride with the 15.45 service to Holt. I was hoping for some lovely late afternoon sunshine but some high cloud drifting in off the North Sea spoiled my efforts!

76034 (76084), going on-shed, Weybourne station
Having finished its work for the day Class 4MT 76084 has run light engine from Sheringham and is now running back towards the shed road. Looking at the ground disk signal it has yet to get permission from the signalman to leave the line that it is on. Unlike a diesel that just needs switching off, a small team of people will service the steam locomotive and prepare it for service again the next day.

D5631, 1744, Class 101 DMU & 76034 (76084), Weybourne yard
And now the sun has finally come out! Having been plagued by some irritating high cloud drifting in from the North Sea the yard at Weybourne is now bathed by some warm late afternoon sunshine. In this view D5631 is seen stabled to the extreme left with Class N2 0-6-2T side tank locomotive 1744 just in front of it. In the background is one of the resident Class 101 DMUs whilst Class 4MT 76084 arrives in the yard after operating its trains for the day. The fire will be damped down, dropped and any service items attended to. It will then be prepared for further service tomorrow with a team arriving early in the morning to light the fire.

8572, 16.30 Holt-Sheringham, Weybourne station
The driver of the 16.30 Holt to Sheringham North Norfork Railway service is doubtless keen to get his train away from Weybourne as it's the last passenger train of the day. He will then need to bring the locomotive backlight engine to go on-shed for the night. I wonder in steam days (pre-1968) how many drivers wore a red bow tie on the footplate?
