Our usual trip to Norwich by train took place on a rather wet and miserable day. This time, I took my bike that enabled me to ride out towards Thorpe Bridge rather than hanging about at the station. It also meant that I could ride back into the city centre and meet my wife and son for lunch at the BBC Forum centre.

156418, LE 09.46 Sheringham-Norwich, Sheringham station
Our train for Norwich waits at the small single platform station at Sheringham. My wife, son and I took the 09.46 service all the way to Norwich worked by GA's 156418. Notice the new Tesco supermarket in the background that opened last year on land once occupied by a poor quality block of flats.

The view from the end of Sheringham's Network Rail station looking over the appropriately named Station Road towards the current limit of the North Norfolk Railway. The level crossing was reinstated four years ago with great fanfare and sees occasional use being limited to twelve times per year.

90010, LE 11.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P31), Norwich station
90010 'Bressingham Steam & Gardens' is still displaying its taillights at Norwich after arrival with a train from London. The Greater Anglia train will be prepared and then be led by the electric back to Liverpool Street at 11.00. Notice the two Greater Anglia (Abellio East Anglia Limited) liveries applied to the Mkl. III stock with the more recent plain white coaches looking a lot smarter than the older variants that date from when the TOC took over from the ultimately flawed and doomed National Express East Anglia in February 2012.

The two faces of Greater Anglia seen at Norwich station. In the background is the newer variant of the joint Dutch and Japanese owned company's livery in the form of 90008 'The East Anglian' that will work the 11.30 to Liverpool Street. In the foreground is this the former livery being worn by 90010 'Bressingham Steam & Gardens' that will leave in the next five minutes with the 11.00 service also to Liverpool Street. Notice the stand of Norwich City's Carrow Road football ground above the roof of 90008.

A pair of Greater Anglia units wait at Norwich station. To the left 165417 will work the 10.59 to Lowestoft imminently whilst to the right one of their single-car units, 153309, has terminated after working the 2J71 09.48 from Lowestoft.

Crown Point Depot CC signal box (BR, 1982)
Typical of its time is the BR built utilitarian signal box just east of Norwich Crown Point depot. It was opened in 1982 at the same time that the old shed moved from a site just west of the station to Crown Point. The move and huge reorganisation of the Norwich station area necessitated the closure of a number of mechanical boxes. As well as controlling entry and exit moves at Crown Point depot itself, the panel also manages all moves around the station area.

153332, ECS off Crown Point Depot, Wensum Junction
Looking smart in its Abellio Great Anglia livery 153332 comes off Crown Point depot after a short reverse move. Having been prepared by depot staff it then ran the short distance to Norwich station in a ECS move ready to work its next service, in this particular case the 12.05 to Lowestoft.

156419, LE 10.46 Sheringham-Norwich (2S11), Girling's level crossing TG264083
Girling's level crossing is located between Wensum Junction (to the immediate east of Crown Point) and where the Sherringham branch diverges at Whitlingham Junction. The 10.46 Sheringham to Norwich service has just joined the mainline at the latter of the two junctions just past the footbridge with 156419 working the train.

153309, LE 11.36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2C16), Girling's Level Crossing TG264083
156309 working the 11.36 Norwich to Great Yarmouth service crosses the River Yare over bridge number 359 as it approaches Girling's level crossing just east of Norwich. The crossing has user-operated gates but is fairly busy as it leads to a large boatyard and a number of waterside properties.

156409, LE 11.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P17), Girling's level crossing TG264083
156409 approaches Norwich from the east at Girling's crossing working the 2P17 11.17 from Great Yarmouth. Despite the light colouring of their stock Abellio Greater Anglia appear to make an effort to maintain it keeping it looking smart.

156419, LE 11.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S16), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
156419 slows on the approach to Whitlingham Junction a short distance behind where I am standing on a rather rickety footbridge. The Greater Anglia train is then going to take the branch line towards the north as the 11.45 Norwich to Sheringham 2S16 service. Note Girling's level crossing (at OS grid reference TG264083) in the background where the previous sequence of photographs was taken.

153332, LE 12.05 Norwich-Lowestoft (2J74), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
153332 gathers speed as it approaches Whitlingham Junction working the 12.05 Norwich to Lowestoft service. Notice the crossover level with the rear of the train allowing a greater degree of flexibility just west of where the Sheringham line branches away to the north behind where I am standing.

66725, 09.57 Harwich Refinery-North Walsham tankers (6P41), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
A regular freight flow over the Sheringham branch as far as North Walsham at least is the empty condensate tanks from Harwich. The train goes to North Walsham to be filled with the highly flammable liquid that is a by-product of the production of North Sea natural gas that is piped ashore and processed at the large Bacton terminal some four miles from Walsham. 66725 'Sunderland' leads the empties on the approach to Norwich's Whitlingham Junction. Notice the wiper in mid-sweep as the drizzle from earlier had now turned to some more determined rain!

156417, LE 11.48 Lowestoft-Norwich (2J75), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
Again, looking very smart, 156417 approaches the eastern side of Norwich with the 11.48 from Lowestoft that will terminate at the city's Thorpe station in a few minutes time. The train has just crossed Whitlingham Junction with the double-track (as far as Hoverton and Wroxham) curving off to the left.

156418 rejoins the mainline at Whitlingham Junction working the 11.46 Sheringham to Norwich 2S134 Greater Anglia service. Notice the mini wind turbine and solar panel attached to the post level with the rear of the train. This was used to provide additional power to control the electronics at the junction.

156409, LE 12.36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth (2P20), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
Seen a short time earlier and photographed at the level crossing just visible in the background. Such is the intensive use that the Greater Anglia units are put to it is in use again heading back to Great Yarmouth having left Norwich a few minutes previously at 12.36. I am standing on a vintage rickety iron footbridge that stands at the end of Whitlingham Lane that leads to a riverside footpath.

156417, LE 12.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S18), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
It appears in this photograph that the crossing at the bottom of the photograph can allow vehicles to cross the line. However, the fixed crossing goes nowhere with nothing but a grassy and somewhat overgrown footpath on the left side of the line. So, I doubt that there will be anybody calling the signalman from the 'phone. 156417 approaches the crossing with the 12.45 Norwich to Sheringham 2S18 Greater Anglia service.

153309, LE 12.17 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (2P19), Whitlingham Lane crossing TG266083
153309 was seen earlier on its outward working to Great Yarmouth and is now seen again returning as the 12.17 return to Norwich. The Class 153 Super Sprinters are a valuable and useful asset to any rail operator being efficient and flexible in use. Greater Anglia has just announced that it will be refurbishing its fleet of units.

47501 & 47841, stabled, Norwich yard
In recent years the yard to the west of Norwich station's platforms has become synonymous with a collection of vintage locomotives assisting Great Anglia with their chronic shortage of units that has been on-going for a number of years now. DRS have been the providers of the motive power and stock used that, between services, is found scattered around the sidings. The DVT and the Mk. II coach seen here are not part of the DRS portfolio wearing the older Greater Anglia livery are probably stabled due to a fault. To the far left by the Transit van is 47501 'Craftsman' with 47841 in the foreground.

47818, 47841 & 47813 stabled, Norwich yard
Stabled in the yard adjacent to Norwich station are three of DRS' finest in the form of 47818, 47841 and 47813 'Solent'. All are stabled ready to undertake work hired to Greater Anglia who are still having problems with unit availability. Notice the period Austin Maestro Van on the platform complete with a small British Rail wording and the famous double arrow. Most of us will remember these in yellow all over the network during the later 1980s replacing the hundreds of Bedford HA vans that they had on their books.

90010 'Bressingham Steam & Gardens' waits at Norwich whilst its stock is cleaned and prepared. It will then work the 16.00 departure to London Liverpool Street. I saw and photographed the same locomotive four and a half hours earlier, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29952518404/x90010-11-00-norwich-london-liverpool in the same place on the same platform. In the intervening time, the locomotive and stock have worked to London and back.

47818, 47813, 47841 & 47501, stabled, Norwich yard
All four of the hired-in DRS Class 47 are seen in this view at Norwich for work on the Greater Anglia network. To the left is 47818 with 47813 'Solent' centre. To the right is 47841 in the background with 47501 partially hidden by the wall. Despite the collection of vintage diesels, I was a little disappointed that there was no Class 37 as I have seen before.

The front ends of 47818 'Craftsman' and 47813 'Solent' are seen in the sidings just adjacent to Norwich station awaiting their next turn of duty. They are hired in by Abellio Greater Anglia from DRS to cover for their perpetual shortage of units. Unfortunately, there were none in operation on the day of my visit.

Two Greater Anglia units are seen at Norwich with services to the east coast. To the left, 156417 is getting away with the 2P26 15.36 service to Great Yarmouth. 156306 will leave soon afterwards with the 15.50 2J82 to Lowestoft.

170203, LE 15.40 Norwich-Cambridge (1K83), Norwich station
According to the station clock, 170203 should be departing from Norwich in a shade over three minutes with the 15.40 to Cambridge. This particular Greater Anglia unit is still wearing its older style of livery that will soon be replaced by the new and more modern white paintwork. Close examination of the photograph reveals my bike leaning against the barrier at the far end of the platform.
