I had studied RTT and realised that the was a convergence of freight at Roade close to home on this particular Saturday afternoon. If everything went to plan there could be six freights within an hour or so and, amazingly, it all came together! It was a shame that the winter weather did not play ball.

90046, 08.11 Felixstowe North-Crewe Basford Hall (4M93), Roade cutting
FREIGHT NUMBER ONE - 90046 leads the 4M93 Felixstowe to Crewe Freightliner northbound through Roade cutting. As a result of considerable work two years ago the flanks of the cutting were cleared and stabilised with wire netting. The saplings are already taking over again as nature reverts the cleared area to type.

With its nose cone coupler cover open an unidentified Pendolino heads south through Roade cutting working the 1B23 Birmingham New Street to Euston train. Note the last wagon of the 4M93 08.11 Felixstowe to Crewe Freightliner just going out of view on the down slow line.

FREIGHT NUMBER TWO - subsequently numbered to the last freight observed in Roade cutting 90045 leads the 09.20 Felixstowe to Basford Hall Freightliner. A Virgin Pendolino is about to race past the slow-moving freight as it also heads north on the down fast line.

350123, LM 13.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y46), Roade cutting
London Midland's 350123 works the 1Y46 13.14 Birmingham to Euston train through Roade cutting. Normally, this service would be a two-car service but on a Saturday afternoon, just one is deemed sufficient.

92039, 14.05 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O67), Roade cutting
FREIGHT NUMBER THREE - A seven day a week working is the return of empty Ferrywagons from Daventry to Dollands Moor for return to the continent via the Channel Tunnel. Running as 6O67 92039 'Johann Strauss' in its two-tone Railfreight grey with full height EWS logo vinyls leads the train through Roade cutting as a Virgin Voyager approaches at speed on the up fast.

Class 390, VT 12.30 Preston-London Euston ECS (5A93), Roade cutting
An unidentified Virgin Pendolino heads south on the up slow line having taken the line through Northampton rather than running fast via Weedon from Hilmorton Junction. The reason it was on the slow was that it was an empty stock working running as 5A93, the 12.30 Preston to London Euston.

66721, 10.28 Felixstowe North-Hams Hall (4M21), Roade cutting
FREIGHT NUMBER FOUR - This is my first photograph of 66721 'Harry Beck' wearing its unique London Underground livery, consisting of all-over white bodysides with a section of the London tube map on its flanks, this side showing the part of the 1933 edition. On the other side is the 2013 map with the respective years marked on the cab ends along with London Underground and London Transport Museum branding. The brightly liveried locomotive certainly brightens up the dismal scene deep in the cutting as it works the 4M21 10.28 Felixstowe North to Hams Hall Freightliner.

90047, 12.32 Crewe Basford Hall-Felixstowe North (4L96), Roade cutting
FREIGHT NUMBER FIVE - The sun is just trying to cut through the January gloom as 90047 climbs through Roade cutting leading the 12.32 Crewe Basford Hall to Felixstowe North intermodal service. Now twenty-four years old this Class 90 is looking a little tatty and dated in its Freightliner two-tone dark and light Grey livery.

350112, LM 13.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U32), Roade cutting

66567, 10.14 Felixstowe North-Lawley Street (4M20), Roade cutting
FREIGHT NUMBER SIX - the final of six freights in just over an hour at Roade cutting sees 66567 lead the 4M20 10.14 Felixstowe to Lawley Street. Out of the six seen this is the only the second to be diesel hauled with the others being headed by Class 90s and a 92. Time to ride home on my bike for a cup of tea and a crumpet!
