After such a smashing start to the day, just two hours later the weather had totally changed. This did not stop me going out a second time to see the diverted 4L98 freight.

350117, LM 11.24 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Milton crossing 350117 takes the Weedon line thus avoiding Northampton forming the 11.24 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. It is routed this way due to engineering works in the Northampton area. The cloudy and overcast conditions are in stark contrast to my visit to the same location just three hours earlier. 350244, LM 12.23 Bletchley CS-Rugby (5U33), Milton crossing Due to the closure of the Northampton route London Midland were having to be creative with their services to avoid the dreaded 'bustitution' scenario for passengers. As part of their arrangements, they were running services starting from Rugby heading north to Birmingham, Crewe and Liverpool. In order to get the trains in the right place, 350244 is working the 5U33 12.23 Bletchley to Rugby empty stock move going via the Weedon line. It is seen passing Milton Crossing just north of Roade. With the weather now having reverted to type in the form of winter grey gloom 350105 works the 1U28 10.37 Crewe to Euston past Milton Crossing on the Weedon line between Roade and Blisworth. 221113, VT 11.28 Chester-London Euston (1A19), Milton crossing The 11.28 Chester to London Euston has one more stop at Milton Keynes before arriving in the capital seen here approaching Roade cutting at Milton Crossing. I suspect that many passengers aboard the Virgin Trains Voyager will be relieved to arrive as I am sure that they find these particularly poor trains as noisy and uncomfortable as I do! 66421, 11.01 Daventry-Purfleet (4L98), Milton crossing Wearing its DRS compass livery 66421 works the Sunday 4L98 Tesco Express (as it has been dubbed) past Milton Crossing a short distance north of Roade. This working leaves Daventry for Purfleet today at 11.01 but usually a bit later. It has left earlier than normal as it initially had to head north to Rugby for the 66 to then run round and bring it south on the 'mainline' via Weedon avoiding Northampton due to engineering works. I was hoping for some sunny weather at this classic location but the bright weather of earlier had been replaced by cloud and dullness with it now spitting with rain; all the best plans and that!
