An absolute epic......an overnight stay on York station seemed like a great idea when discussed between Graham and me back in high summer! However, the December weekend that we chose ended up being bitterly cold with heavy snow but all this added to the utter craziness of the whole thing! Prior to the nocturnal stay on York station, Graham and I headed for Doncaster and Hull to take in the delights of the Humber ferry in its final few months of operation before being ousted by the opening of the bridge. We travelled in the Austin 1100 that included a lift to Yorkshire for my college geography lecturer that helped a little towards the costs. This trip was subject to an article published in Traction magazine issue 237.

The drive up to Yorkshire from Wiltshire was a long one but pretty uneventful. We headed for Doncaster and hit the jackpot straight away with some Deltic action. We then continued east via Gilberdyke to Hull and then the Humber ferry. There are two recordings made on the MV Faringford here and here as it sailed in the dark and during a blizzard from new Holland Pier back to Hull. The weather started cold and bright but deteriorated in the late afternoon when it began to snow and then a blizzard ensued that made the drive to York across the Wolds a little tricky! |

A night spent on York station in December and in the snow....hmmmmmm sounds like a great idea! Apart from the absurdity of it, there was a purpose, the capture some Deltics and sleeper services that were still forms of Mk. I steam-heated stock. We did manage to get some interesting workings as well as frostbite; it was absolutely bitter! The journey home the next day was interesting, to say the least. Graham was absolutely knackered so we were forced to make some stops for coffee and a snooze. |
