A rendezvous with Andy at Castlethorpe is not far off from being equidistant from our respective homes so it was chosen for us to meet for an hour or so. After the recent heatwave earlier in the week with three days of over thirty degrees Celsius today was a lot cooler and very overcast.

66171, 07.05 Dollands Moor-DIRFT LE (0M45, 3L), site of Castlethorpe station 66171 is not a Class 66 that I photograph very often. In fact, the last time I pictured it working a train was back in 2014. Here it passes light engine through Castlethorpe just south of Hanslope Junction as the 07.05 Dollands Moor to Daventry. Light engine movements in and out of the Daventry Rail Freight Terminal are not that common. With thanks to Mike for the reporting number. 221103 & 221109, VT 12.23 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G20, 1L), site of Castlethorpe station Get them while you can! It was presumed that the former Virgin Voyagers would soldier on in their former operator's livery for some time until their new operator would dispose of them in two years time. 325005, 11.20 Crewe TMD-Wembley PRDC (5A91, 9E), site of Castlethorpe station A daily working is the 5A91 empty running of one of Royal Mail's Class 325s from Crewe to Wembley's Park Royal depot. Often it is a pair of units but on this day just 325005 is working the 11.20 from Crewe. The unit is seen heading south past the site of Castlethorpe's station that closed in September 1964 after a prolonged campaign to keep it open led, at one stage, by the business tycoon and Labour MP for Buckingham and pension thief Robert Maxwell no less! 66416, 09.12 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M63, 1L), site of Castlethorpe station Freightliner's 66416 leads the 4M63 09.12 Felixstowe to Trafford Park service past Castlethrorpe. This is a virgin photograph of this particular Class 66 that is quite a surprise given that it arrived on UK shores in 2006! 66550, 12.16 Lawley Street-Felixstowe North (4L46, 1L), site of Castlethorpe station The first of two up freights heading south past Castlethorpe within four minutes of each other! Freightliner's 66550's exhaust is smoking well as it leads the 4L46 12.16 Lawley Street to Felixstowe. Since my last visit to this particular spot, the growth of saplings on the former island platform is beginning to interfere with the opportunities to take photographs. The gap that the locomotive is seen in is really the only chance one now has to capture a locomotive that is not partially or completely obscured. 66304, 13.50 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L48, 1L), site of Castlethorpe station Just four minutes after the last up freight 66304 leads the 13.50 4L48 Daventry to Purfleet 'Tesco Express' working. This is another example of a Class 66 of which I have few photographs so I am pleased to have 'got this one in the bag'! 66956, 09.25 Southampton MCT-Garston (4L28, 28E), site of Castlethorpe station The Singaporean container operator ONE has only been in operation for two years but its boxes certainly stand out on a mixed train such as this! 66596 leads the 09.25 Southampton MCT (Maritime Container Terminal) to Garston past Castlethorpe between Wolverton and Hanslope Junction.
