65. The Jolly Marketeer & The Bath Christmas Statesman-28.11.15

A relatively short drive in my Combo van to King's Sutton in order to see two charters passing within half an hour of each other. After a lovely bright and frosty start, it clouded up as I was waiting for the second charter but there was still enough light for a reasonable photograph. I was surprised to be the only photographer at this popular location.

82301, CH 07.12 Kidderminster-London Marylebone (1H10), King's Sutton
DVT 82301 leads the 07.12 Kidderminster to London Marylebone approaching King's Sutton. I like the 'silver bullet' style livery adopted by Chiltern on their stock and locomotives. As it is the last weekend in November the sun is very low in the sky and causing some vision issues for the driver witnessed by the sun visors extended over halfway down the screens.

The 1M26 07.15 Southampton to Manchester CrossCountry service goes away past me at King's Sutton. The train is being worked by 221135 one of the Voyagers that run with the tilting mechanism disabled. The photograph is taken from a former farmer's crossing that has recently been closed with the gates removed and fenced.

220027, XC 06.37 Nottingham-Southampton Central, (1O06), King's Sutton
After the bright and frosty start to the day the cloud is now beginning to roll in from the north-west creating a dramatic skyscape. CrossCountry's 220027 approaches King's Sutton working the 06.37 Nottingham to Southampton Central.

168329 & 168001, CH 08.15 Birmingham Moor Street-London Marylebone (1H12), King's Sutton
A pair of Chiltern units get a move on past King's Sutton working the 08.15 Birmingham Moor Street to Marylebone service. King's Sutton does not enjoy a particularly useful stopping pattern with most trains passing straight through much to the chagrin of the locals and the local user group who have been campaigning for more trains to serve the large village.

165125, GW 09.08 Banbury-Oxford (2L39), King's Sutton
Still wearing its First Great Western livery some months after the company ceased to operate one of the small numbers of trains that run to and from Banbury using two-car Turbo units is seen approaching King's Sutton. The services operate an all-station service between Banbury and Oxford running every two hours or so. 165125 is working the 09.08 Banbury to Oxford train seen from a former farmer's crossing point on the floodplains of the River Cherwell. Interesting fact time......King's Sutton is the only station that Great Western Railway (the new TOC from September this year) serves in Northamptonshire if only by a matter of a few metres with the county boundary running just west of the down platform.

66054, 06.31 Birch Coppice ES-Eastleigh East (4O43), King's Sutton
After a very bright start to the day, the sun has been tempered by a huge bank of cloud moving relentlessly in from the northwest. The front of 66054 is still partially illuminated by the weak sun as it passes King's Sutton leading the 06.31 Birch Coppice to Eastleigh East Freightliner train.

221132, XC 06.16 Leeds-Southampton Central (1O82), King's Sutton
The 06.16 Leeds to Southampton Central CrossCountry service passes King's Sutton worked by 221132. The sun has all but gone now thwarting my efforts to capture the two charters that are following shortly behind this service train in the glorious winter sunshine of a little earlier in the day!

37602 & 37605, outward leg of The Jolly Marketeer, 06.18 Derby-Chichester (1Z47), King's Sutton
37602 and 37605 shatter the peace as they pass King's Sutton on a late November morning. Despite that, the sky had clouded over some weak sunshine has just managed to catch the front of the train that makes a pleasant change from what usually happens! The Pathfinder charter, running as 1Z47, left Derby at 06.18 and was heading to Chichester giving travellers the opportunity to sample the Anglo-Saxon city's famous Christmas market.

57601, outward leg of The Bath Christmas Statesman, 04.12 Aberystwyth-Bath (1Z82), King's Sutton
Thank goodness for the weak burst of sunshine that has just managed to illuminate the front and sides of West Coast's drab liveried 57601! The locomotive is leading the outward leg of Statesman Rail's charter to Bath that left Aberystwyth at an unearthly 04.12! Initially, the charter was piloted by departmental 97303 (formally 37178) as far as Shrewsbury due to it being fitted with ERTMS equipment enabling it to operate on the Cambrian line, something that the Class 57 could not do. The train is seen passing King's Sutton.

57313, outward leg of The Bath Christmas Statesman, 04.12 Aberystwyth-Bath (1Z82), King's Sutton
Dead in tow on the rear of Statesman Rail's 1Z82 charter 57313 is seen passing King's Sutton. This locomotive led the train earlier in the day when it left Aberystwyth at an anti-social 04.12 being piloted by ERTMS equipped 97301 (ex 37182). This photograph shows one of Statesman Rail's Mk.IIf coaches that look smart in their part Pullman, part GWR style livery.
