Yet another trip to London with my lovely wife! This time we had tickets for the excellent musical Kinky Boots that was of particular interest to us two being residents of the centre of shoemaking and where the musical was set, Northampton.

Redevelopment of old Northampton station
Apart from a few minor works, the development of Northampton's new station is almost complete. The turning circle at the back of the station is now tarmacked and in use, compare this view with a photograph taken some ten months ago at..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/27713201604/demolition-old-northampton-station

Redevelopment of old Northampton station
Northampton has had a procession of 'new' stations over the years with the lastest one now almost completed after three years of work. This view from the concourse towards platform one shows the newly completed turning circle by the lower access doors. Compare this view with the one taken back in May.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28463421204/demolition-old-northampton-station

350118, LM 09.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W08), Northampton station
A little unusually, our train to London, the 09.33 Birmingham to Euston, departed from Northampton's platform two rather than the customary platform one. London Midland's 350118 and another unit on the rear wait to leave whisking my wife and off for our day out.

221103, VT 12.23 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G20) & 390129, VT 12.03 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G19), London Euston station
Two Virgin Trains that will work to Birmingham New Street within half an hour of each other wait at London Euston. To the right, the 9G19 will leave first with the 12.03 service worked by 390129 'City of Stoke-on-Trent'. To its left, 221103 will depart twenty minutes later from platform six with the 9G20 12.23 service.

90049, stabled Thunderbird, London Euston station
On hire from Freightliner for Thunderbird duties, 90049 sits on the blocks at London Euston. This photograph further illustrates what a dreary station Euston is particularly at night. I hope that when (if?) the HS2 works begin that something far more fitting and grand is built rather like the approach taken to the re-building of St. Pancras and neighbouring King's Cross.

390122, VT 19.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S06), London Euston station
Like 390129 'City of Stoke-on-Trent' photographed earlier in the day 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' also has its draw gear cover in the retracted position. This must do nothing for the aerodynamics of these streamlined machines and offers no protection to the equipment in the bay behind the nose cone. 390122 'Penny the Pendolino' waits at Euston to work the final Scottish express of the day, the 19.30 1S06 to Glasgow Central.

350109, LM 19.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y79), London Euston station
Our usual train home after one of our regular visits to London waits at Euston's platform seven. 350109 will take us back to Northampton as the 19.49 to Birmingham New Street. This train can get extremely busy as it's the first down off-peak service north and is usually worked by a single set as in this instance.
