2. A local walk

After a return drive to Leeds from home, I took an extended teatime walk around the village of Roade to get my paces up for that day. Every time that I crossed the railway at each of the four bridges that span the line I managed to take a photograph of a different freight working!

325014, 16.21 Willesden PRDC-Sheildmuir (1S96, 2E), Roade cutting
The 1S96 'down mail' is timetabled on the fast line that is always a bit risky at this time of day (around 17.00 at Roade). Nine times out of ten it runs fast from Hanslope to Hillmorton Junctions as it is here passing through Roade cutting. 325014 is leading the train with two other units behind it that I was not able to identify.

66555, 12.57 Birch Coppice-Felixstowe North (4L57, 8E), Roade cutting
66555 has been a regular performer in recent months on various Freightliner services through Roade. It is seen here leading the pretty well loaded 4L57 12.57 Birch Coppice to Felixstowe through Roade cutting. With the following 4L92 just north of Northampton meant I had enough time to get to the next bridge up the line if I was to take a pretty rapid 'power walk'!

66558, 14.03 Ditton-Felixstowe North (4L92, RT), Hyde Road bridge
After about five minutes of waiting on Hyde Road bridge high above Roade cutting 66558 appeared slogging along with the 4L92 14.03 Ditton to Felixstowe Freightliner. 4L18 was directly behind this train running on single amber signals so I had to get a move on to the next bridge in Roade that carries the busy A508 over the line.

66713, 14.18 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (4L18, 6E), A508 bridge
Within two minutes of arriving at this spot on the A508 bridge in Roade, I saw the reflection of 66713 'Forest City's' high-intensity light on the shiny railhead under Hyde Road bridge in the distance. It is leading the 4L18 14.18 Trafford Park to Felixstowe North. I had spotted 4M57 heading north and it was just approaching Bletchley at this time. Not a problem for me to get to the old station footbridge but I had to stop at the garage to get bread; would I make it?

66504, 12.57 London Gateway-Garston (4M57, 34E), site of Roade station
Having stopped at the garage to buy bread there was a bit of a COVID related queue and I was conscious that the 12.57 London Gateway to Garston 4M57 was approaching Roade fast. I actually broke into a run as I approached the old station footbridge as it appeared around the corner under Ashton Road bridge. I just had time to get the camera out and set it up to get this photograph of Freightliner's 66504 leading the train. This is a super late afternoon spot when the sun is out but not so good on a dull evening such as this. Compare it with...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29012363604/x66425-09-55-tilbury-dirft-4m07-site for example!
