I went out today for a couple of walks for three interesting workings. These were for a Leicester to Old Oak Common light engine move, the movement of five ex GE Class 90s off-lease to their new owner then, to round off the day, the return of a GA Class 317 following work at Wabtec's Kilmarnock facility.

37800, 07.42 Leicester LIP-Old Oak Common (0V73, 77E), Ashton Road bridge
I had picked this repeat working up on RTT and noticed that it was running early again. A quick nip across the field from home finds 37800 'Cassiopeia' running light engine as the 07.42 Leicester to Old Oak Common. The locomotive is seen approaching Ashton Road bridge just south of the village of Roade. Rail Operations Group sent 37800 south to collect a Class 442 from Eastleigh the following day.

66020, 07.05 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 18E), between Roade & Ashton
A bit of a grab shot and taken against the light shows 66020 leading the daily 6M45 07.05 Dollands Moor to Daventry. Now operated by DB Cargo UK this locomotive arrived on our shores in October 1998. When twenty-two years old many British Railways first-generation diesels had either been withdrawn from service or were in the process of being so. For example, the entire Western Region Hydraulic fleet or the Peaks.

90015, 90004, 90013, 90009 & 90012, 08.42 Norwich Crown Point-Crewe Basford Hall (0Z25, 14L), between Roade & Ashton
Five more former Greater Anglia Class 90s head north to their new home at Freightliner's Crewe Basford Hall headquarters. Passing fields between Roade and Ashton the quintuple is led by 90015 'Colchester Castle', with 90004 'City of Chelmsford', 90013, 90009 and 90012 'Royal Anglian Regiment' tucked in behind. Ironic that these locomotives started their working lives on these lines in the late 1980s only to move away and now return again but to become lowly freight locomotives rather than hauling front line passenger trains.

66425, 09.55 Tilbury-DIRFT (4M07), between Roade & Ashton
A broadside of 66425 as it heads north leading the 09.55 Tilbury to DIRFT. This locomotive has been operated by DRS since its arrival in the UK in 2007 and now wears the company's revised all-over deep blue livery with a white and light blue logo and white numbers.

350407, LN 17.45 Northampton-London Euston (2N58, 2L), Ashton Road bridge
In the evening light 350407 leads two other classmates past Roade's Ashton Road bridge leading the 17.45 Northampton to London Euston service. This Desiro is one of the sets inherited from TransPennine Express with this one last seen when I visited Edinburgh Waverley in August 2016, see....... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25778333004/x350407-10-12-edinburgh-waverley

66110, 13.15 Trafford Park-London Gateway (4L56, 125L), Ashton Road bridge
66110 leads the 13.15 Trafford Park to London Gateway Freightliner past Roade about to pass under Ashton Road bridge. It is quite extraordinary that despite not being owned and operated by EWS since January 2009 that it still wears its complete livery and branding. I do not understand why DB Schenker and DB Cargo UK have not even applied any branding in the last eleven years?

390134, VT 16.56 Wolverhampton-London Euston (1B56, 1E), site of Roade station
With the fast lines still closed (now approaching the third week) 390134 'City of Carlisle' passes the site of Roade station working the 16.56 Wolverhampton to Euston. Along with other operators, Avanti West Coast recast its timetable towards the end of March due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions only to do the same exercise again to take account of the prolonged closure of the Weedon line.

37884 & 317884, 11.38 Kilmarnock Bonnytown-Ilford EMUD (5Q08, 5E), site of Roade station

The combo is returning as the 11.38 Kilmarnock Bonnytown to Ilford 5Q08 with the unit having received attention at the Wabtec plant that, unfortunately, is set for closure with all work moving to Doncaster.
