50. The Bournemouth Flyer-22.08.15

On a pleasant August day, I took a short drive out to King's Sutton to see the passing of The Bournemouth Flyer. I chose a spot a short walk north of the Northamptonshire village that is less frequented by photographers. Unfortunately, some lineside growth needed a little pruning, good job I always carry a pair of secateurs in my camera bag!

221134 heads north towards its next stop at Banbury forming the 06.37 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly. Spring and summer growth at this spot a short distance north of King's Sutton made photography at this spot a little tricky so it was a good job that I took my ladder and secateurs.

CrossCountry's 220109 picks up speed as it approaches King's Sutton working the 06.37 Nottingham to Bournemouth service. Notice the yellow milepost showing eighty-seven miles, in this case, for the Great Western route to London Paddington via Oxford and Didcot.

Despite being seventeen years old, the Class 168s still look good in their latest incarnation now wearing Chiltern Railways' latest white and silver 'mainline' livery. 168112 passes a spot a short distance north of King's Sutton working the 08.00 Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill train.

165123 hurries south at King's Sutton with the 09.02 Banbury to Oxford. This shuttle service is a little of a First Great Western outpost but as such it the only operator to serve Heyford and Tackely stations.

66572, 07.37 Hams Hall-Southampton Maritime (4O14), King`s Sutton SP486377
66572 looks smart in the late summer sunshine as it approaches King's Sutton leading the 4O14 07.37 Hams Hall to Southampton Freightliner. In recent years freight traffic has become a more significant feature of this line but its status as a primary trunk route makes the finding of paths quite tricky at times.

37401 & 37405, outward leg of The Bournemouth Flyer, 06.17 Chester-Bournemouth (1Z37), King`s Sutton SP486377
37401 'Mary Queen of Scots' and 37405 make a fine sight as they approach King's Sutton leading the outward leg of The Bournemouth Flyer railtour that left Chester at 06.17. The tour was a joint effort organised by Virgin Trains, DRS and The Railway Magazine. I was hoping that the Class 37s would be working hard at this location and whilst I could hear them for some time leaving Banbury they had notched back a little by the time they reached me as the train was catching up the previous running Southampton Freightliner. The train trailed this freight all the way to Oxford arriving a little adrift as a result.

57307, outward leg of The Bournemouth Flyer, 06.17 Chester-Bournemouth (1Z37), King`s Sutton SP486377
57307 'Lady Penelope' brings up the rear of The Bournemouth Flyer railtour as it passes King's Sutton on the Northamptonshire/Oxfordshire border. In fact, the county boundary follows the juvenile River Cherwell that is just behind the trees in the background to the right.

220004, XC 07.47 Southampton Central-Newcastle (1E86), King`s Sutton SP486377
220004 works the 1E86 07.47 Southampton to Newcastle CrossCountry service past King's Sutton. I could not imagine a worst way to travel between the south coast and the northeast of England than in one of these units, which in their four-car formation as here, are wholly inadequate.

165019, CH 09.25 Banbury-London Marylebone (2H31), King`s Sutton SP486377
Chiltern Railway's 165019 is running slightly slower than normal as it approaches King's Sutton with the 09.25 Banbury to Marylebone service. The reason for the restricted speed is that it is fairly close behind the previous charter, 'The Bournemouth Flyer' that itself was trailing a Freightliner working. However, things would soon pick up for the Chiltern service as it will stop at King's Sutton station and then diverge from the route of the preceding trains at Aynho Junction.
