To coincide with my 'permitted exercise' today I went to Roade cutting to capture the Northern transfer to Wolverton Works. As well as regular other work, Wolverton is repainting and refurbishing much of Northern's fleet of stock. This has involved some unusual visitors to the southern end of the WCML even if they are lowly units!

Class 221, VT 14.35 Chester-London Euston (1A45, RT), Roade cutting
An Avanti West Coast Voyager passes through Roade cutting forming the 14.35 Chester to London. I am pleased to report that during the emergency timetable the only Voyager workings appear to be those that go away from the wires for part of their journey with all other services being handled by Pendolinos. Of course, all the trains are running virtually empty as the travel restrictions continue in an effort to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

350236, 350125 & 350242, LN 15.55 Northampton-London Euston (2Z46, 1E), Roade cutting
Another empty train heads towards London - well if not empty probably with no more than a handful of passengers on board as the Covid-19 continues to bite! 350236, 350125 and 350242 form the 15.55 Northampton to Euston running as 2Z46 through Roade cutting.

156426, NT 13.16 Newton Heath TMD-Wolverton Centre Sidings (5J70, 38E), Roade cutting
Having now outlived most of the first generation DMUs that they replaced, the Class 156 Super Sprinters are now over thirty years old. Despite this, they live on and are still receiving work to prepare them for future use. More likely to be seen at Newcastle, Buxton or Southport, Northern's 156426 is well away from its usual haunts as it passes through Roade cutting with the 13.16 Newton Heath to Wolverton Works 5J70. On arrival at the centre sidings, it will be permitted access to the works via the tunnel under the fast lines. Over the coming few weeks it will receive Northern's new livery and be in receipt of an interior 'refresh' along with other modifications and improvements.
