24. A fifth weird day with a camera malfunction-27.03.20

The fifth day of the strangest week of our lives ends again with another beautiful and sunny day. For a change, I went out with my 'big' camera to get the Highland Sleeper passing across the field from home. I tried to take a picture before it passed and the camera threw up a card error fault, thinking I had left the card at home from the previous day. I kicked myself and resorted to a pan shot with my iPhone. On checking later, the card was in the camera but I don't think that it was pressed home properly. We'll see if this problem arises again; hopefully not! Later in the day I took my second walk (naughty me!) and in about half an hour recorded the same number of freight as passenger trains passing Roade - such is the nature of our railways at the moment.

92018, CS 20.26 Inverness, 21.12 Aberdeen, 19.00 Fort William-London Euston (1M16, 7E), between Roade & Ashton
I have a relatively old iPhone but it is still capable of taking reasonable pictures when called upon despite its weaknesses. Due to a 'card read error' on my Canon 5D and having made the effort to walk out from home at 06.30 I resorted to using my iPhone to capture the up Highland Sleeper passing between Roade and Ashton on the southern WCML. 92018 leads the 1M16 on a stunning spring morning with frost still on the grass around the edge of the field. CS sub-lease seven midnight teal liveried 92s from GBRf dedicated to the Sleeper services. Looking at them side on makes me think how smart they would look with a nice red nameplate and crest perhaps reflecting the heritage of the places that CS services serve?

66730, 10.36 Felixstowe North-Hams Hall (4M23, 69L), Roade cutting
66730 'Whitemoor' leads the 10.36 Felixstowe to Hams Hall Freightliner through a very dark Roade cutting. Despite the lengthening days (British summertime begins on Sunday), the depths of the cutting is still very dark contrasting with the top of the cutting walls bathed in the warm afternoon sunshine.

86614 & 86604, 11.13 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M87, 24E), site of Roade station
Freightliner's 86614 and 86604 lead the 11.13 Felixstowe North to Trafford Park service past the site of Roade station taken from the footbridge that spans the lines. As has become a more common practice this week with the implementation of the much-reduced emergency timetable, control routed this on the down fast thus avoiding Northampton. The fourteen remaining Freightliner Class 86s are limited to seventy-five miles per hour so the driver of this service would need to keep the power on as a Pendolino was close behind!

66952, 12.57 Birch Coppice-Felixstowe North (4L57, 1L), site of Roade station
66952 emerges from Roade cutting into the evening sunshine at the site of the former station leading the 4L57 12.57 Birch Coppice to Felixstowe North. Notice the recreation ground in the background of the image. On a warm spring Friday afternoon this would usually be packed with youngsters and families enjoying the facilities. In line with the COVID-19 limitations, this is firmly off limits and, judging by this view, the rules are being followed with nobody in sight.

390117, VT 16.03 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F20, 12L), site of Roade station
Last year Network Rail kindly cleared away all the trees in this location opening up new photographic opportunities of this view in Roade at the site of the old station. 390117 'Blue Peter' works the 16.03 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street considerably faster than the preceding train a short time before and which would soon be slowing up the Class 390 no doubt, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28942159604/x86614-86604-11-13-felixstowe-north

66610, 14.15 Stewarts Lane-Guide Bridge (17E) site of Roade station
66610 leads a Friday only freight working passing the site of Roade station in the superb late afternoon sunshine. The 14.15 Stewarts Lane to Guide Bridge is composed of a mixture of MWA-B and MJA wagons none of which appeared to be loaded. The Polish built MWA-B wagons arrived in the United Kingdom during 2018 and 2019 but some have already been ruined by the worst efforts of the graffiti vandals.
