I took an hour or so off work to see the passage of The White Rose railtour hauled by one of 'my' locomotives, D9009 'Alycidon'. I drove my van to the nearest point on the ECML to me that was just south of Biggleswade. Unfortunately, despite being high summer it was a very grey and dismal day but at least the train was on time so I could get back to work.

82211, GN 05.25 Newcastle-London King`s Cross (1Y05), Holme Green crossing TL192426 Wearing its relatively recently applied Virgin branding, DVT 82211 leads the 05.25 Newcastle Central to King's Cross. 321418, GN 07.32 Peterborough-London King`s Cross (1Y05), Holme Green crossing TL192426 Having just left Biggleswade station some two miles away in the distance, 321418 and another Great Northern unit is gathering speed past Holme Green forming the 07.32 Peterborough to King's Cross service. Despite the seemingly exposed position to take this photograph I was standing behind a gate at a farm track crossing point. 91118, GR 08.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S07), Holme Green crossing TL192426 This IC225 set is nearly there with regard to its transformation from East Coast Trains to Virgin East Coast! The leading locomotive and Mk. IV coach is still in the old colours whilst the rest of the set wears its smart new look. The 1S07 08.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh passes Holme Green crossing near the village of Langford being led by 91118. 43423, GR 08.00 London King`s Cross-Sunderland (1N90), Holme Green crossing TL192426 43433 still wears its buffers as fitted during the late 1980s when it was in use as a surrogate DVT due to late delivery of the complete IC225 sets. The buffers, as fitted to Grand Central's 43423, do nothing to enhance their classic looks! The short set HST is working the 08.00 King's Cross to Sunderland service past Holme Green crossing between Biggleswade and Arlesey. 321419, GN 07.35 London King`s Cross-Peterborough (2P04), Holme Green crossing TL192426 Great Northern's 321419 looks somewhat dwarfed by the electrification paraphernalia as it heads along the ECML past Holme Green crossing located a short distance south of Biggleswade. The unit is working the 07.35 King's Cross to Peterborough stopper on the down slow line. In a previous life, this was a unit was one that I saw frequently in its distinctive Silverlink livery on the WCML between Birmingham and Euston. 91102, GR 08.06 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D05), Holme Green crossing TL192426 91102 'City of York' speeds across the flatlands of Bedfordshire leading the 08.06 King's Cross to Leeds morning express. 82228, GR 05.59 Newcastle-London King`s Cross (1Y08), Holme Green crossing TL192426 As the 08.06 King's Cross to Leeds disappears into the distance approaching Biggleswade station the 05.59 Newcastle to King's Cross is about to pass my spot at Holme Green crossing. The IC225 set still wears its East Coast livery and branding some four months after the state-owned operated relinquished its operations to Virgin East Coast. The 1Y08 express is lead by DVT 82228. 82209, GR 06.40 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A06), Holme Green crossing TL192426 For a change, I like taking portrait photographs especially when using my trusty but infrequently used Sigma 80-200 zoom lens. As it was such a dull July morning I had to have the lens wide open at f4.0 that meant the depth of field was somewhat compromised even more so at 200mm meaning the track in the foreground was out of focus. However, a narrow depth of field often draws the eye to the subject as long as it is actually in focus itself! DVT 82209 leads the 06.40 Leeds to King's Cross past Holme Green crossing just south of Biggleswade. Note that the entire train is in the former operator's livery apart form the Class 91 on the rear that is in Virgin East Coast's bright new colour! 180109, HT 06.02 Beverley-London King`s Cross (1A91), Holme Green crossing TL192426 Hull Trains operate some HSTs and a number of Class 180 Adelante units that they inherited from First Great Western. These notoriously unreliable units are not well-liked with the simplicity of the HSTs prefered by crews. Thankfully going well and to time, 180109 heads south past Holme Green crossing with the 06.02 Beverley to King's Cross service. 43238, GR 07.30 Lincoln-London KIng`s Cross (1B81), Holme Green crossing TL192426 HST power car 43238 leads the 07.30 Lincoln to King's Cross Virgin East Coast service past Holme Green crossing between Biggleswade and Arlesey. 91124, GR 08.30 London King`s Cross-Newcastle (1N08), Holme Green crossing TL192426 At full chat on the ECML, 91124 powers the 08.30 King's Cross to Newcastle past Holme Green crossing in Bedfordshire. This image clearly shows the height and extension of the pantograph as fitted to the Class 91s. The design of this and the 'budget' electrification constructed by BR in the 1980s is often the cause of failure with wires getting tangled in the pantographs and tearing down long stretches of it. D9009, outward leg of The White Rose, 08.17 London King`s Cross-York (for 60163 on) (1Z55), Holme Green crossing TL192426 A little clichéd maybe but I have given one of my images of D9009 'Alycidon' leading The White Rose charter a bit of Photoshop treatment! I have removed the entire electrification paraphernalia and desaturated the image to black and white. With the Deltic being in green and hauling an entire set of Mk. 1 stock the image has taken on a kind of 1960s feel. D9009, outward leg of The White Rose, 08.17 London King`s Cross-York (for 60163 on) (1Z55), Holme Green crossing TL192426 A far more conventional image than the previous one shows D9009 'Alycidon' leading The White Rose charter running as 1Z55. It left King's Cross at 08.17 for York where 60009 'Tornado' would take over. The Deltic makes a fine sound as it runs on the down fast line at Holme Green crossing south of Biggleswade. I was a little surprised to be the only person at this location but it was a pretty miserable July morning and a weekday come to that!
