Living at Roade I am close to Silverstone. On British Grand Prix day there is often a charter that brings some of the many race fans to Northamptonshire. Northern Belle operated the charter this year and I went out and saw it twice in the morning and on its return after the race. Incidentally, the GP was won by Lewis Hamilton driving for Mercedes.

Under very grey skies for the start of July an eleven-car Virgin Pendolino passes between Roade and Ashton on the southern WCML with the 08.20 Euston to Manchester.

57305, outward leg of British GP special, London Euston-Milton Keynes-Rugby-Milton Keynes (1Z64), Ashton Road bridge
Having deposited its paying customers at Milton Keynes for their onward transportation to Silverstone by bus, The Northern Belle stock is hauled by 57305 'Northern Princess' near to Roade. It left Euston and travelled at a leisurely pace to Milton Keynes giving passengers plenty of time to take breakfast. It then ran to Rugby to return to Milton Keynes with more fare-paying passengers. Looking at the grey skies, it could be that the Grand Prix was one affected by rain.

57304, outward leg of British GP special, London Euston-Milton Keynes-Rugby-Milton Keynes (1Z64), Hyde Road bridge
Having picked up some passengers at Rugby, 57304 'Pride of Cheshire' leads the Northern Belle Grand Prix special south through Roade cutting seen from Hyde Road bridge. The passengers will alight at Milton Keynes and be conveyed the relatively short distance to Silverstone by a fleet of busses. The train will then travel to Bletchley and be stabled for the rest of the day.

Class 221s, VT 17.40 London Euston-Glasgow Central (9S97), Victoria bridge
With the overcast conditions earlier in the day having given way to a bit of sunshine, a pair of Class 221 Voyagers pass Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton with the 17.40 Euston to Glasgow Central.

Class 150 & 153366, 17.02 Tyseley-Bletchley sidings ecs (5B03), Victoria bridge
A regular working on this section of the WCML is the So empty coaching stock return move from Bletchley to Tyseley. The move is for the London Midland operated Marston Vale units to return to their base in Birmingham for servicing. A balancing working heads back to Bletchley ready for them to take up operations at the start of the following week. Here, a two-car class 150 and single-car 153366 pass Victoria bridge just south of Roade with the 5B03 17.02 Tyseley to Bltechely working.

57305, return leg of British GP special, Milton Keynes-Soho-Milton Keynes-London Euston (1Z65), Victoria bridge
Having picked up some returning British Grand Prix fans at Milton Keynes 57305 'Northern Princess' leads the Northern Belle operated charter that is initially heading north as far as Soho in Birmingham. It would then head south again to Euston collecting any stragglers again at Milton Keynes to return them to London. Many would have been celebrating Lewis Hamilton's win ahead of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

57304, return leg of British GP special, Milton Keynes-Soho-Milton Keynes-London Euston (1Z65), Victoria bridge
With 57304 'Pride of Cheshire' on the rear of Northern Belle's British Grand Prix charter the train passes Victoria bridge with the village of Roade in the background. The charter has just left Milton Keynes taking motor racing fans back from the Grand Prix travelling first to Birmingham and then south again to Euston.
