A trip to London with my wife to visit the O2 to see a fantastic exhibition of Elvis Presley memorabilia. I am not a fan but it was facilitating to see nonetheless.

Demolition of old Northampton station
The demolition of the old station at Northampton is complete. The site once occupied by the station buildings in the foreground is destined to be part of the car park and a taxi rank.

Contractors continue their work decommissioning the former station at Northampton. I believe that this structure will remain as part of the re-modelled station at the end of platforms four and five.

350370, LM 09.25 Northampton-London Euston, Northampton station
Our train from Northampton to Euston waits at the town's platform one. My wife and I took the 09.25 service, the first up off-peak train of the day.

390040, VT 18.57 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H83), London Euston station
390040 waits at Euston's platform seven to leave with the 1H83 18.57 to Manchester Piccadilly. On a warm summer's evening, Euston is a tolerable station to be at when the strong outside light manages to permeate down to platform level. During most other times, it remains pretty dismal.

350253, LM 19.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y79), London Euston station
Our train home from Euston waits at Euston's platform seven. London Midland's 350253 will work the 19.49 to Birmingham New Street that we took as far as Northampton.

390042, VT 14.42 Glasgow Central-London Euston (1M15), London Euston station
A broadside view of 390042 following its recent arrival at Euston with the 14.42 from Glasgow Central. One cannot argue that the shape of the Pendolino, quite a pioneer in rail travel when introduced in 2002, is purposeful and quite elegant. Virgin, who has run them since new, are currently preparing their bid to maintain their hold on to the west coast services for another seven years; I wonder if they will be successful?

Former fertilizer distribution depot, Thingley Junction looking east
The fertilizer distribution depot to the northern side of Thingley Junction has been out of use for some years but the siding remain rail connected. The extensive empty space has been wisely kept by Network rail and is now to be the home of the contractors working to construct the massively delayed and over-budget GWML electrification. For a time in the 1990s the sidings were used to store redundant Mk. 1 stock and, on occasions, some locomotives that included 50017 'Royal Oak'. On one occasion towards the end of this period, I passed the junction on a train on a Sunday evening and witnessed a Mk. 1 coach fully ablaze with the fire engine in attendance. In this remote location, it will have been as a result of vandals I suspect.
