As a life member of the Deltic Preservation Society, I'll always make an extra effort to get out and see when one of 'my' locomotives are out on the mainline. This time, I did not have far to drive in my Combo van as 55009 'Alycidon' was leading a railtour along the former GW Birmingham route so I headed off to Banbury. Pleased as I was to see and hear a Deltic on the mainline, it was a shame that it was such a dull spring day!

168005, CH 08.27 London Marylebone-Birmingham Snow Hill (1G12), Hardwick Farm bridge SP463429
Chiltern's 168005 climbs away from Banbury forming the 08.27 Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill service. Whilst the scene appears bucolic with the intense greens of spring providing the backdrop, looks can be deceiving with the busy M40 behind me providing a constant and intrusive soundtrack.

220031, XC 07.45 Bournemouth-Manchester Piccadilly (1M30), Hardwick Farm bridge SP463429
Having stopped at Banbury station some mile or so south of this location, CrossCountry Voyager 222031 is accelerating away from the town working the 07.45 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly. There was once a line branching off to the right in this image, disappearing into the greenery, that ran a short distance to Wroxton ironstone quarry. In addition, the Great Central linked to the Great Western at a spot close to the colour light at, what was referred to as, Banbury Junction where their line from Culworth Junction joined.

D9009, outward leg of The Golden Jubilee Pullman, 07.56 London Victoria-Bridgnorth (1Z56), Hardwick Farm bridge SP463429
Looking superb and complete with a replica Flying Scotsman thistle adorning the front, D9009 (55009) 'Alycidon' accelerates away from Banbury leading the outward leg of The Golden Jubilee Pullman charter that started out from London Victoria. It hauled the lovely, mainly, vintage Pullman stock to the Severn Valley Railway where GWR 2-8-0 2857, SR 4-6-2 34053, LMS 2-6-0 43106 and 55019 all were involved in hauling some special trains for the day. Despite the familiar whisp of blue exhaust from the Deltic it was, unfortunately, not being worked particularly hard at this location, the rising gradient being one of the reasons that I chose this spot, as the charter was right behind a Chiltern service and running under caution; the best-made plans and all that!

67005, outward leg of The Golden Jubilee Pullman, 07.56 London Victoria-Bridgnorth (1Z56), Hardwick Farm bridge SP463429
67005 'Queen's Messenger' is seen on the rear of The Golden Jubilee Pullman passing under the M4o motorway just north of Banbury. The smashing set of Pullman stock (plus a few colour coordinated interlopers!) left Victoria and was shown on RTT as having its destination as Bridgnorth that is the terminus of the Severn Valley Railway. Out of sight on the front haling the train was D9009 'Alycidon', see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/28429127604/d9009-golden-jubilee-pullman-07

168113, CH 09.06 London Marylebone-Birmingham Moor Street (1R17), Hardwick Farm bridge SP463429
Travelling at walking pace hot on the heels of a railtour that had just passed is 168113 working the 09.06 Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street. The train is seen a short distance north of Banbury about to pass under an occupation bridge just adjacent to the very noisy M40 motorway.

168218, CH 09.14 Stratford-on-Avon-London Marylebone (1H37), Hardwick-Farm-bridge SP463429
168218 comes under the slab of concrete that is the M40 overbridge just north of Banbury. It is forming the 09.14 Stratford-on-Avon to London Marylebone Chiltern service, next stop, in about a mile and a half, will be Banbury.
