80. The Severn Valley Autumn Special-16.11.19

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2019 > 80. The Severn Valley Autumn Special-16.11.19
A Saturday morning walk through the village to see the outward run of The Severn Valley Autumn Special excursion from Euston to Kidderminster. I went to see it at the footbridge that spans the lines on the site of the former Roade station. This bridge has been closed for nearly two years due to building work taking place but it has recently 'unofficially' reopened! After the charter had passed, I took a long walk home via the cutting.

390154, VT 08.20 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H12, 2L), site of Roade station
Looking rather like an Albino train, 390154 heads north with the 08.20 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. The totally de-branded Pendolino is seen passing the site of Roade station with the vast housing estate in the background that now occupies the site of the former Pianoforte site. This view is a new one as Network Rail has undertaken a huge vegetation clearance exercise in the foreground. However, as it is looking south-east with some tall trees to the right, the photographic opportunities offered by it are a little limited.

350240, 350267 & 350257, LN 09.05 Northampton-London Euston (1N20, 4L), site of Roade station
This day was the first of a series of Saturdays on the run-up to Christmas with industrial action being taken against London NorthWestern. There was a handful of trains running and this was one of them, a strengthened three-set service as the 09.05 Northampton to Euston. It is formed by three Desiros, 350240, 350267 and 350257, all of which, as 3502XXs, could well be going off-lease soon. Notice the detritus in the foreground left behind by Network Rail, If they want to stop vandalism, in particular, graffiti, they should do a lot more about keeping their own house in order first!

390129, VT 08.30 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B08, 4E) & 390039, VT 08.40 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H36, RT), site of Roade station
A passing of Virgin services at the site of the former station at Roade in Northamptonshire. To the left, 390129 'City of Stoke-on-Trent' heads south with the 08.30 Birmingham New Street to Euston 1B08 service. To the right, proudly wearing its Coventry flag on the cab front, 390039 'Lady Godiva' passes northwards with the 08.40 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. The latter was named at Coventry station in April 2019 and is part of the promotion campaign for Coventry's City of Culture status during 2021.

67006, outward leg of The Severn Valley Autumn Special, 08.07 London Euston-Kidderminster SVR (1Z67), site of Roade station
This is one of those occasions that I didn't really want the sun to put in an appearance! Looking south-east from the footbridge that spans the WCML at Roade in Northamptonshire meant early morning sun was going to be problematic. 67007 'Royal Sovereign' leads the classic set of BR liveried Mk. II stock as the 08.07 Euston to Kidderminster Severn Valley Railway. The excursion, named The Severn Valley Autumn Special, was carrying enthusiast for a day out on the railway's steam gala marking the end of the season (with the exception of the Santa Specials).

67004, outward leg of The Severn Valley Autumn Special, 08.07 London Euston-Kidderminster SVR (1Z67), site of Roade station
67004 always looks smart in its DB livery so is always worth a photograph. Here it is being dragged along for the ride at the rear of The Severn Valley Autumn Special running as 1Z67. The special, that left Euston for Kidderminster at 08.07, is seen passing the site of Roade station.

68013 & 68002, 06.47 Crewe Gresty Bridge-Wembley yard (1Z67), Roade cutting
To quote Forrest Gump, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get'. The same could be said of our hobby, I had been tracking this mysterious working on RTT during my walk around the village so I thought that it would be worth a look. Low and behold, 68013 and 68002 'Intrepid' appeared at the northern end of Roade cutting. They were forming the 06.47 Crewe Gresty Bridge to Wembley light engine move. However, I am not at all sure what this was in connection with?

66510, unidentfied down Freightliner, Roade cutting
I was watching this freight on OpenTrainTimes but I could find nothing on RTT so I waited in anticipation. 66510 is seen passing through Roade cutting with a down Freightliner that, even after the event, I have not been able to identify. I even asked my friend, Mike, to have a go as he subscribes to Freightmaster but he drew a blank. All he could tell me was that 66510 spent the rest of the weekend at Lawley Street in Birmingham so I have to sumise that was its destination.
