Due to engineering works in the Watford area, we decided to use the Midland route to and from St. Pancras rather than taking a bustitution service. This did mean that we had to drive the relatively short distance from home to Wellingborough and leave the car. If the Nene Valley line were still open, or even Roade station, then we could have done the whole journey, most conveniently, by train, roll back to the early 1960s anybody?

222009, EM 15.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D49), London St
Whilst the Barlow trainshed at St. Pancras is a superb structure that is a place to visit in its own right even if you are not actually taking a train, the Midland line station is not so impressive, it's just too 'slabby' and clinical, and that if you can actually get on it! The gateline is too small, as is the actual station, with staff herding passengers like animals into roped off channels that I find extremely irritating. Anyway, gripes aside, 222009 waits at the station to leave with the 15.29 to Nottingham. We took this 1D49 service to Wellingborough.

222003, EM 15.26 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F48), London St
222003 'Tornado' stands inside the gloomy interior of St. Pancras' Midland station. It will soon work the 'fast' 15.26 to Sheffield. It's a shame that the same amount of effort was not put into creating this particular part of the grand St. Pancras station as a whole, it's such a disappointment.

With a rather smokey engine, it's a good job that 43075, the rear power car of the 1B48 13.32 from Nottingham is extending beyond the canopy of London St. Pancras' Midland station. Tucked inside the station under the canopy is 222003 'Tornado' that will work the 15.26 to Sheffield.

Tickets, London St. Pancras-Wellingborough
Our return tickets from St. Pancras to Wellingborough. At £26, they are more than we would normally pay from Euston to Northampton but due to the closure of the WCML we had limited options.
