A Sunday walk spent dodging the showers took me to a spot in Roade that has been created by the recent construction of the vast new housing estate on the former Pianoforte factory site. My visit coincided with the passing of the class 86 0Z88 light engine move and two Sunday freights.

Yet another shower rolls in to dampen my day as 390042 passes Roade with the 10.38 Liverpool Lime Sreet to Euston. The photograph is taken from a bank created to facilitate the construction of a new housing estate. The site if the former Roade station is just beyond the footbridge in the background.

350244 & 350105, LN 11.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G08, 4L), site of Roade station from former Pianoforte site
A pair of Desiros composed of 350244 and 350105 pass Roade working the 11.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street. The image is taken in tricky lighting from a new spot that has been created by the construction of a vast new housing estate in Roade. The Network Rail land in the middle distance was once occupied by sidings that were used by the Pianoforte/Simplex factory site where I am standing.

390011, VT 11.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G08, 4L), site of Roade station from former Pianoforte site
390011 'City of Lichfield' works the 11.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street past Roade. This location is on top of a bank built as part of a large housing estate occupying the former Pianoforte/Simplex site. An interesting location but one that is absolutely hopeless for the sun at this time of day, witness the lack of detail in the sky!

Panoramic view, site of Roade station from former Pianoforte site
Taken using my iPhone in panoramic mode, the WCML is seen at Roade with a class 350 heading south. This new view has been provided courtesy of the construction of a new housing estate. The land behind the fence, now occupied by a vast number of houses was previously home to the former Pianofirte/Simplex site.

Having undertaken railtour duties yesterday leading the Cumbrian Mountain Express, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/27726201404/x86259-cumbrian-mountain-express 86259 'Les Ross/ Peter Pan' returns from Euston to its stabling point in Rugby carriage sidings. This 0Z88 light engine move is timetabled to take the Weedon loop line (the fast line) but very often control put it on the slow to go via Northampton. The former is the case today as it passes Roade.

66011, 09.06 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6C24), site of Roade station from former Pianoforte site
66011 leads a short train made up of cargo waggons is seen passing Roade taken from a new location created by the construction of a large bank associated with a large and new housing estate. 66011 is leading the 09.06 Dollands Moor to Daventry rail freight terminal carrying some sort of imported steel product. Looking at the menacing sky, it suggests that I am in for an imminent soaking, indeed I was within the next ten minutes!

390135, VT 11.36 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A20, 20L), A508 road bridge
After the rain, the sun put in an appearance, just enough to illuminate the southern end of Roade cutting. 390135 'City of Lancaster' (only named on one side) catches the sun woking the 1A20 11.36 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston. I love the lighting in this image with the rain leaden sky and the trees and foliage beginning to take on its autumn glow.

66432, 13.09 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L48), A508 road bridge
DRS 66432 leads the 13.09 4L48 from Daventry rail freight terminal to Ripple Lane Freightliner. The train is seen about to pass under the busy A508 road bridge in the village of Roade having just emerged from the famous cutting. The sun had just gone behind a troublesome cloud seconds before the train arrived, indeed, it appeared through the viewfinder that the train was chasing the sun!
