As summer morphs into autumn, there is often a run of lovely days as a blocking high pressure takes over. When this happens, it is often pleasantly warm with a nice quality of light combined with the subtle changes taking place in the vegetation as the leaves begin to change colour in the 'season of mellow fruitfulness'. Taking full advantage of one such day, I popped out on a Sunday lunchtime on my bike to Roade cutting to catch the returning class 86 following yesterday's railtour duties. This coincided with the regular 4L98 Freightliner from Daventry.

An eight-car Desiro passes through Roade cutting working the 12.17 Birmingham New Street to Euston service. Catching plenty of autumn sunshine, 350110 leads 350253.

350118 & 350114, LN 12.31 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W53, 9L), Roade cutting
Two of the earlier batch of class 350 Desiros, introduced on this route new in 2005, where they have worked ever since, pass through Roade cutting. 350118 and 350114 work the 12.31 Euston to Birmingham New Street, a service that arrived some nine minutes late due to delays in the Coventry area.

66425, 13.09 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L98), Roade Cutting
The regular-as-clockwork 4L98 passes through Roade cutting in lovely autumn light hauled by the frequent performer, 66425. This SuO freight service, even though it is timetabled to work through to the Purfleet deep water terminal, often is terminated earlier to continue its journey later. In this particular case, this one worked as far as Ripple Lane.

390002, VT 12.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B24, 4E) & 13.09 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L98), Roade cutting
As the 13.09 DIRFT (Daventry) to Ripple Lane Freightliner crawls through Roade cutting, 390002 'Steven Sutton' sweeps past it forming the 12.50 Birmingham New Street to London Euston. With the warm colours of the vegetation above the cutting, it can only be autumn!

86259, 12.23 London Euston-Rugby CS (0Z88), Roade cutting
Personal experience has made me cautious when going out to photograph this 0Z88 light engine move. It is always timetabled to take the Weedon loop as the final part of its journey from Euston to Rugby carriage sidings. However, it often does not follow its booked route taking the Northampton route instead. I was half tempted to nip out and see this train near to Blisworth, if I had I would have been disappointed on this day as it did, indeed, go via Northampton. Here, 86259 'Peter Pan/Les Ross' passes through Roade Cutting on the down slow line.
