4. Sunday freight-18.01.15

A beautiful winter Sunday tempted me away from jobs around the home and garden to capture some freight and infrastructure workings. I borrowed the wife's Jaguar to go to nearby Victoria bridge.

Class 390, VT 10.01 Preston-London Euston (1A10), Victoria bridge
An unidentified Virgin class 390 sweeps past Victoria bridge just south of Roade on the up fast forming the 10.01 SuO Preston to London Euston. Pendolinos are often seen running with their nose cone covers in the withdrawn position thus exposing their innards; I suspect that it does nothing for their aerodynamic efficiency!

350110 & 350103, LM 11.24 London Euston-Birmingham New Street & Crewe (2Y18), Victoria bridge
A two-set Desiro passes Victoria bridge on the approach to Northampton forming the 11.24 to Birmingham New Street and Crewe. On a weekday, these trains run separately, with one taking the classic route and the other via the Trent Valley line. On Sundays, these train split on arrival at New Street.

66427, 12.09 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L98), Victoria bridge
A 100% regular Sunday freight working past Roade is the Daventry (DIRFT) to Purfleet or London Gateway freightliner working. The time that this leaves Daventry varies considerably but it still carries the same reporting number of 4L98. It is seen passing Victoria bridge between Northampton and Milton Keynes with DRS' 66427 leading.

Class 390s, VT 12.28 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S67) & 10.58 Preston-London Euston (1A16), Victoria bridge
At a passing speed in the region of two hundred miles per hour, two class 390s cross at Victoria bridge between Northampton and Milton Keynes. The down service to the left is the 12.28 Euston to Glasgow Central whilst the up train is the 10.58 Preston to Euston. In the background is one of Roade's iconic water towers with them being located in the village with it being the highest part of this area of Northamptonshire.

With the winter sunshine reflecting off the roof and bodyside of 350259 it passes Victoria bridge between Ashton and Roade in Northamptonshire. The Desiro was working the 2N15 11.53 Euston to Northampton service.

66415, 08.20 Birmingham International-Willesden Euroterminal, Victoria bridge
Under lovely winter skies, 66415 leads the 08.20 Birmingham International to Willesden Euroterminal infrastructure train past Victoria bridge on the southern WCML at Roade. This train was composed of a variety of engineering wagons with sections of reclaimed track as well as ballasting machines. Notice that the 66 is in DRS blue but has had its branding removed or covered over.

66024, 12.02 Willesden West London-Junction-Crewe Basford Hall, Victoria bridge
A short train composed of just five ballast wagons and a flat heads sedately north past Victoria bridge just south of Roade. 66024 leads 66078 working the 12.02 Willesden West London Junction to Crewe Basford Hall engineering train. This picture illustrates why I like taking pictures at this time of year. If this had been taken in July, yes the light would have been strong but the whole of the underframe and the front of the locomotive and wagons would have been virtually totally black with a loss of all detail. Whereas, it is all lit with the detail clearly illuminated by the low sun angle.

66078, 12.02 Willesden West London Junction-Crewe Basford Hall, Victoria bridge
I am not a fan of going-away shots but when it's a short train of this type, it really makes very little difference. Also, in such lovely winter light this scene looks so good it just had to be taken! 66078 is trailing along at the rear of the 12.02 Willesden West London Junction to Crewe Basford Hall engineering train with 66024 doing the work up at the front. The combo is seen passing Victoria bridge, a spot very close to my home, that is actually in this view across the fields in the distance, near to Roade in Northamptonshire.
