I took a bike ride from home to Wellingborough and then the train the short distance to Kettering. This move was in order to collect a car and bring it back to Northampton.

222104, EM 10.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D24), Wellingborough station
221105 passes through Wellingborough station at line speed forming the 10.29 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. This photograph is not tipped but shows clearly the camber of both the track and the slope away from the track of down platform at Wellingborough. The latter was a late addition following the disastrous accident where seven people were killed on 2nd September 1898 when the 19.15 St. Pancras to Manchester was derailed after hitting a luggage trolley that had run off the platform on to the track. One of the chief findings of the Board of Trade enquiry was that platforms should slope away from running lines, something that is still done today.

43075, EM 10.32 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B33), Wellingborough station
The old order is still operational at Wellingborough as 43075 passes through leading the 10.32 Nottingham to St. Pancras HST working. 43075 was an Eastern Region power car delivered during early 1976 as part of set 254010. This set did not enter service on the ECML until 1977 and, along with its classmates, precipitated the withdrawal of the Deltics.

222008, EM 11.16 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P34), Wellingborough station
Against a gloomy, grey and photographically flat sky, 222008 arrives at Wellingborough working the 11.16 Corby to St. Pancras train. I am not a fan of these Meridians and their Voyager cousins for that matter, but they have served the MML well over the last few years being infinitely better than the wholly inadequate class 170s that they replaced in 2004.

222002, EM 10.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F25), Wellingborough station
222002 passes through Wellingborough station with the 10.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield. Whilst considerably rationalised, Wellingborough station still retains many of its Midland characteristics and remains a pleasant station to use. One interesting feature at the southern end of platform one is its width. It is very narrow with the yellow line virtually against the wall!

222016, EM 11.01 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M26), Wellingborough station
My train arrives at Wellingborough station. I took 222016 working 11.01 St. Pancras to Corby the short distance to Kettering, a journey time of about eight minutes. Notice my classic Raleigh Royal bike leaning against the wall soon to be loaded on to the train. As the journey was just one stop and very short, I kept it in the vestibule with me rather than bothering the guard to stow it in the tiny bike stowage area.
