As it was a lovely crisp November day, I took a local walk from home. This involved me passing the former SM & J railway near the 'chocolate box' village of Stoke Bruerne.

A bridleway drops down from the Stoke Bruerne to Blisworth road to the Grand Union canal just north of Stoke Bruerne village. The bridleway emerges just next to the south portal of the 1.7 mile long Blisworth tunnel. About half way down this bridleway it used to pass under the SMJ railway through a brick bridge. The abutment of the bridge is seen in this picture now very overgrown but stubbornly intact!

A fence post stands in the dappled autumn sun just near to the village of Stoke Bruerne. The fence was the former boundary of the SMJ railway that closed in 1965. The company must have used good quality and well preserved timber as both these posts were still firmly placed in the ground and showing now signs of terminal rotting.

The low autumn sun picks up the lovely colours of the the former SMJ bridge abutment just north of Stoke Bruerne. There are some worrying cracks appearing in the Victorian brickwork, not surprising given the attack it is under from the trees and plants that have taken over.

Nature has completely taken over the abutment of the SMJ bridge near to Stoke Bruerne. Under the cloak of ivy the brickwork was getting a little cracked but appeared to structurally integral. The tall embankment on top of which the line was carried can be clearly seen in this view.

Taken from the top of the eastern bridge abutment looking at the one on the other side of the track that passes below. The bridge that spanned the gap between the two carried the former SMJ railway that linked the Midland, LMS and GWR railways as it went from east to west across the south Midlands. During war time it was a strategically important railway for a number of reasons and was upgraded as such.

The fencing posts and steel wires are still intact marking the boundary of the SMJ railway near to the village of Stoke Bruerne. Such a simple piece of ageing infrastructure, but an almost ghostly reminder of times past.

In the past, the railways must have used much higher quality timber for items like this fence past in order for them today being still firmly planted in the ground. This one in an end post that still has the attachment cleats for the wires through it. It marks the boundary of the former SMJ railway's boundary near to Stoke Bruerne.
