Class 221, VT 11.10 London Euston-Chester (1D85), Roade cutting
A class 221 heads north through Roade cutting working the 1D85 11.10 Euston to Chester. Despite it being mid-autumn, there is still enough light deep in the magnificent cutting to illuminate a train.

Class 222s, VT 06.52 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (9M50), Roade cutting
The Anglo Scottish 9M50 06.52 Edinburgh to Euston composed of two class 221s passes south through Roade cutting. What an expensive way to run a railway, double manning throughout and using up gallons of diesel. What would be wrong with operating a set of refurbished Mk.III coaches hauled by a class 90; the customer experience would be so much better and, even including higher track access charges, I am sure that it would be cheaper to operate.

Class 221, VT 08.55 Holyhead-London Euston (9M50), Roade cutting
A Virgin class 221 heads south through Roade cutting with the 08.55 Holyhead to Euston working. This is an interesting journey and one that I have never made in its entirety. However, I hope that Andy and I will have the opportunity to do it one day, but I would prefer it was not on a Voyager!

350369 & 350118, LM 10.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W10), Roade cutting
350369 and 350118 operate the 10.33 Birmingham New Street to London Euston through Roade cutting. It's good that the sun has come out to brighten up the depths of the cutting and its interesting to see the reflection of the bridge that I'm standing in the cab window of 350369.

350257, LM 10.54 London Euston-Northampton (2N39), Roade cutting
350257 forms the 10.54 Euston to Northampton through Roade cutting. These units have become synonymous with this line and the routes through to Birmingham and Liverpool. There is talk of their time now being numbered as new stock is cascaded form elsewhere but we will see?

350257, LM 10.54 London Euston-Northampton (2N39), Roade cutting
350257 works the 10.54 Euston to Northampton through Roade cutting. A bit back lit but I like the lighting down in the depths of the cutting when the low sun is still able to illuminate it.

350242 & 350236, LM 10.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W10), Roade cutting
350242 and 350236 form the 10.54 Birmingham New Street to London Euston. Looking at the colours of the trees and shrubs, it can only be autumn. The countryside takes on a lovely golden hue that photographs really well at this time of year.

350128, LM 10.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U26), Roade cutting
350128 heads south through Roade cutting on the up fast with the 10.02 Crewe to London Euston. After a poor start to the morning, the cloud has begun to clear and it's turned into a smashing afternoon.

390136, VT 10.55 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A28), site of Roade station
390136 'City of Coventry' passes the site of Roade station with the 10.55 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston. There is nothing remaining of the station except for the station master's house painted white now a private residence at the top of the station access road.

350125, LM 11.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U33), site of Roade station
Not the best composed picture taken of 350125 passing the site of Roade's old station but I wanted to show the extent of the clearance of the old Pianoforté factory site that is nearing completion. Over the coming few years it will morph into a vast housing estate adding dramatically not only to Roade's population but also stretching its infrastructure to the limit.

390123, VT 12.00 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H23), site of Roade station
Heading north past the site of the now closed Roade station, 390123 forms the 12.00 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. Where the trees are growing directly above the train was the location of Roade's large LNWR signal box.

68014 & 68009, 09.35 Wembley-Crewe Gresty Bridge (0K69), site of Roade station
68014 and 68009 'Titan' form the 09.35 Wembley to Crewe Gresty Bridge light engine movement. This 0K69 working was running about three hours late by this stage as it passes the site of the closed Roade station. In the background, the clearance is now virtually complete of the old Pianoforté factory site with the infrastructure being installed for the new houses that are to be built.
