The journey home was broken at Box for the first of a series of neck treatments. I also paused just east of Swindon for a bit of steam on the mainline!

Commemorative plaque, A4 road bridge, Box
The commemorative plaque that sits on a stone plinth next to the A4 road bridge in the village of Box needs a little TLC. It was placed here in 1986 by BR to mark the 150th anniversary of the tunnel when the western portal was also restored. It's just such a shame that the tunnel and its surroundings (along with the historic section of the GWML) through Bath will be blighted by the forthcoming electrification.

Class 43, GW 11.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington (1A14), A4 road bridge, Box
An unidentified class 43 HST plunges into Box tunnel forming the 11.00 Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington service. Even by midday the sun was not able to illuminate the depths of the cutting here but it is mid-October I suppose!

43186, GW 10.00 Paddington-Paignton (1C09), A4 road bridge, Box
It looks like Network Rail need to get a tree clearance team down into Box cutting and to cut back the uncontrolled growth that is now brsuhing the sides of the trains as they pass. It really is not good enough that on one of the country's prinicple main lines this kind of poor maintenance prevails. 43186 leads the 10.00 Paddington to Paignton as it exits from the western portal of Box tunnel.

43030 & 43153, GW 11.30 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C12), Bourton SU228874
43030 'Christian Lewis Trust' and 43153 power the 11.30 Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads past Bourton just east of Swindon. Note the bridge in the distance that still has its white square painted on the top left corner. This was a sighting aid and had a semaphore signal directly in front of it that was controlled by Shrivenham signal box a short distance beyond the bridge.

43164 & 43179, GW 11.36 London Paddington-Cheltenham (1G29), Bourton SU228874
43164 and 43179 'Pride Of Laira' work the 11.36 Paddington to Cheltenham Spa past Bourton. This image that has been taken at full zoom shows the pilings close to the cess. When they have been filled with electrification masts this scene will be totally different with a clear and open picture like this rendered impossible.

43015 & 43159, GW 11.58 Bristol Parkway-London Paddington (1L52), Bourton SU228874
43015 and 43159 power the 11.58 Bristol Parkway to London Paddington past the west Oxfordshire village of Bourton. Beyond the trees in the background is the growing town of Swindon. The large white building just above the rear power car is part of the huge Honda factory located on the old South Marston airfield.

43135 & 43063, GW 11.45 London Paddington-Bristol Parkway (1U28), Bourton SU228874
Bourton is a small village in west Oxfordshire that has a population of just over 300. It is adjacent to the GWML and is close to the site of the old Shrivenham station that is just beyond the bridge in the distance. In fact, it is nearer to the station site than Shrivenham itself! 43135 and 43063 power the 11.45 Paddington to Bristol Parkway past the village. The train was terminating at Bristol's Parkway station due to engineering works in the Severn Tunnel associated with the forthcoming electrification.

43186 & 43152, GW 07.41 Penzance-London Paddington (1A16), Bourton SU228874
43186 and 43152 get the 07.41 Penzance to Paddington up to full line speed after leaving Swindon some short distance behind it. This zoomed image really emphasises the clean and in-clutterd lines of this superbly well designed train, a design that still looks good some forty years after its introduction.

66572, 10.58 Bristol FLT-Tilbury (4L32), Bourton SU228874
With just three spaces, the daily 10.58 Bristol FLT to Tilbury Freightliner is almost completely full. 66572 will be doing its best to keep things moving so as not to hold up the following passenger services. There are a number of loops between here and Didcot, where the GWML become four-track, so slower trains can be held until there is a gap in traffic.

6201, 11.53 Gloucester-Southall WCR (5Z62), Bourton SU228874
Jubilee 4-6-0 6201 'Leander' runs along the GWML past Bourton just eats of Swindon with just one support coach in tow. It is undertaking the 11.53 Gloucester to Southall 5Z62 positioning move following railtour duties the previous week when 6201 failed at Gloucester. It was fixed on site and is now returning to its base in order to operate another railtour to Salisbury the coming Saturday.
