A walk across the fields from home through the oilseed rape in full-bloom to photograph the Settle and Carlisle Statesman. Because of the bright yellow landscape I opted for some side-on shots to take in the magnificent colours.

86237 & 86639, 22.01 Coatbridge-Felixstowe (4L89), between Roade & Ashton
This is not a working very often seen in the daylight usually passing through the Northamptonshire countryside in the middle of the night. On this morning severe delays meant that the 22.01 Coatbridge to Felixstowe hauled by veteran AC electrics 86237 and 86639 was captured in the spring sunshine passing the oilseed rape fields between Roade and Ashton. In the background is the village of Grafton Regis with its Norman tower of St. Mary the Virgin's church catching the light.

Using the Sigma 80-200 zoom lens to good effect, 350231 is captured passing the oilseed rape fields between Roade and Ashton forming the 06.14 Northampton Riverside to Milton Keynes ECS working.

221102, VT 05.50 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B01), between Roade & Ashton
Unfortunately, the Sigma 80-200 zoom that I chose to use on this morning does not have the greatest depth of filed of all the lenses out there! Even at focal length of 139mm and at f.7.1 I could not get the foreground in focus. There are zooms available that will do this but even used ones cost upwards of a thousand pounds so justifying the purchase of one is not on the agenda! 221102 'John Cabot' passes between Roade and Ashton working the 05.50 Birmingham New Street to Euston on a glorious but chilly spring morning.

390137, VT 04.19 Longsight-London Euston ECS (5A12), between Roade & Ashton
One advantage of getting up early to see a train is that workings not normally observed are often caught. here is one example, the 5A12 04.19 Longsight to Euston ECS move. On this particularly lovely spring morning it is formed by 390137 'Virgin Difference'. It is seen passing between Roade and Ashton on the southern WCML

350109 LM 05.34 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (2Y57), between Roade & Ashton
350109 heads north between Roade and Ashton on the southern end of the WCML forming the 05.34 Euston to Birmingham New Street. Use of the zoom lens set to its maximum focal length of 200mm has brought the train 'into' the oilseed rape fields through which it is passing.

Proudly wearing its Pride of Birmingham Awards vinyls 390002 'Stephen Sutton' passes through the oilseed rape fields just south of Roade in Northamptonshire with the 06.05 Euston to Preston.

57316, outward leg of The Settle & Carlisle Statesman, Milton Keynes Central-Appleby (1Z14), between Roade & Ashton
Statesman Rail operate a number of railtours throughout the year. They usually utilise WCR locomotives and their own dedicated set of Mk II stock decked out in a pseudo Pullman livery. Here, between Roade and Ashton, 57316, formally Virgin's 'Fab 1', leads the 1Z14 Settle and Carlisle Statesman having just left its start point of Milton Keynes. It headed north to Appleby and, as it name would suggest, over the Settle and Carlisle line.

57313, outward leg of The Settle & Carlisle Statesman, Milton Keynes Central-Appleby (1Z14), between Roade & Ashton
Former Virgin Thunderbird 'Tracy Island', 57313 brings up the rear of the Settle and Carlisle Statesman railtour that started at Milton Keynes and ended up at Appleby in the S & C line. The train is seen passing through the oilseed rape fields between Roade and Ashton. The bright yellow rape flowers certainly brighten up the scene doing their best to make the awful and drab WCR livery applied to the 57 look marginally better!
