10. Trip to Great Bentley-04.03.16

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2016 > 10. Trip to Great Bentley-04.03.16
A work trip to Great Bentley in Essex to collect a car for a customer. I travelled down early from Northampton to Euston, took the tube to Liverpool Street and then a train to Colchester. From there I made the short trip to Great Bentley followed by a walk across some fields to complete the collection. After a drive back to Northampton in a smashing Audi TT I was still able to do an afternoon's work!

350374 & 350370, stabled, Northampton station
The two north-facing bay platforms at Northampton do not see a huge amount of use. Out of hours, they are used for stabling as shown here in the half-light of a cold March morning with 350374 and 350370 awaiting their next duties.

350129, LM 05.57 Coventry-London Euston (1Y80), Northampton station
350129 brings up the rear of the 05.57 Coventry to London Euston commuter service at Northampton station. It was a cold March morning so quite why the fellow walking down the platform was wearing shorts was a mystery!

221107 & 221118, VT 06.20 Rugby-London Euston (1R03), Northampton station
Virgin operate an early morning commuter service that stops at Northampton. It utilises a Class 221 spare set on this day formed of 221107 'Sir Martin Frobisher' and 221118. This service, the 1R03 06.20 Coventry to Euston, does not have a corresponding evening return service as was the case in the past with the fabled loco. hauled 'Cobbler' workings.

350258, stabled, Northampton Riverside
350258 and a classmate sit at Northampton Riverside sidings awaiting their next turn. Since the opening of the Siemens EMUD the Riverside sidings do not see quite so much use as was the case in the past.

350243, ECS for 07.10 Northampton-London Euston (1Y84), Northampton station
350243 has just come down from the Kingsheath EMUD depot and is joining a classmate already on platform one. The duo will then work the 1Y84 07.10 to London Euston. The sky in the background is bright but the sun is yet to rise.

70003, 06.09 Bletchley-Crewe Basford Hall, Northampton station
A picture that really pushed the capabilities of the camera to the limit! 70003 leads the 06.09 Bletchley to Crewe Basford Hall empty stone train through Northampton station. I Have had to do a fair bit of Photoshop work on this image to clean it up as pushing the ISO to 1600 introduced a fair bit of digital noise.

350110, 350377 & 350113, LM 07.00 Northampton-London Euston (1W00), Northampton station
My train to London sits at platform three of Northampton station. The 07.00 Northampton to Euston is one of the three-set (12 car) services, on this day formed of 350110, 350377 and 350113.

90044, CS 20.44 Inverness, Aberdeen, Fort William-London Euston sleeper (1M16), London Euston station
90044 sits on the blocks at London Euston having arrived with the Caledonian Sleeper earlier in the morning. For such a prestigious train I always think that seeing a dull and grey liveried Freightliner branded Class 90 seems somewhat of a let-down.

390118, VT 08.07 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F12) & 90046, CS 23.40 Glasgow Central, Edinburgh-London Euston sleeper (1M11), London Euston
390118 waits at platform two of Euston to work the 08.07 to Liverpool Lime Street. Next to in on platform one Freightliner branded 90046 has brought the 'lowland' sleeper in from Glasgow and Edinburgh. This split service comes together (if all goes well!) at the remote Carstairs station.

87002, CS 08.27 London Euston-Wembley Sleeper ECS (5M11), London-Euston station
87002 'Royal Sovereign' is caught in a difficult position to photograph on Euston's platform one. It is at the head of the Caledonian Sleeper 08.27 Euston to Wembley ECS working. This gets the sleeper stock back to the carriage sidings for servicing prior to the next night's working north again.

Nameplate, 87002, CS 08.27 London Euston-Wembley Sleeper ECS (5M11), London Euston station
The nameplate of 87002 'Royal Sovereign' taken at Euston station about five feet from the subject! I have had to indulge in some Photoshop manipulation in order to irradiate barrel and pincushion distortion; I have almost been successful! I like the Midnight Teal Caledonian Sleeper livery, it is akin to the BR blue of the 1970s. and gives a 'classy' look to the locomotives and stock.

87002, CS 08.27 London Euston-Wembley sleeper ECS (5M11), London Euston station
87002 'Royal Sovereign' sits at the head of the 08.27 Euston to Wembley sleeper ECS stock working. Euston's platform one at the country end is less of a platform and more of a walkway! This makes photography somewhat of a challenge especially with the tricky lighting of a winter's morning!

90005, 09.00 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P14), London Liverpool Street station
Having taken to the tube from Euston to Liverpool Street, this was my train for the second part of the journey to Great Bentley. 90005 'Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson ' stands on the blocks waiting to work the 09.00 to Norwich. I took this train as far as Colchester, a journey that was delayed en-route causing me to miss my connection.

360106, 10.00 Colchester Town-Colchester (2F25), Colchester station
The class 360s are members of the Desrio family of units. I find them a very odd looking unit with very utilitarian front ends! This 'super' train appears to be composed of three units running together I have down as the local 10.00 Colchester Town to Colchester. This would appear to be wrong given the length of the train and that its entering the west side of Colchester station; local knowledge anyone?

360115, LE 09.18 London Liverpool Street-Clacton-on-Sea (1N16), Colchester station
360115 arrives into Colchester station forming the 09.18 Liverpool Street to Clacton service. In this image, some of Colchester's famous long platform can be seen. At 620 metres it is the longest on the UK's network but, it is broken in two parts as can been in the middle distance so I feel it cheats leaving Gloucester's 602 metre platform the longest.

90002, LE 09.30 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P25), Colchester station
The 1P25 09.30 Norwich to Liverpool Street slows for its stop at Colchester station with 90002 'Eastern Daily Press: 1870-2010, Serving Norfolk for 140 Years' at the helm. This Abelio Greater Anglia livery looks very smart but I should imagine that it's a devil to keep looking clean and smart. Notice, the two Mk. 3 coaches spoiling the otherwise uniformed formation being in the older livery of National Express despite that now being out of operation for four years!

321343, LE 10.05 Clacton-on-Sea-London Liverpool Street (1N33) & 82133, LE 09.30 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P16), Colchester station
I stood and observed the two Network Rail workers on the platform end at Colchester for some time. I can honestly say that, apart from doing something on their mobile 'phones, they did precious little work! This is not an exception, I really do think that the efficiency with which the fabled 'orange army' work is very poor at times. A return to the favourite 1970s time and motion study would reveal some interesting facts; rant over! 321343 waits to leave with the 1N33 10.05 Clacton to Liverpool Street whilst DVT 82133 has come to a halt leading the 1P16 09.30 Liverpool Street to Norwich.

DVT 82133 leads the 09.30 Liverpool Street to Norwich out of a bright and sunny, if a little cold, Colchester station. Meanwhile, 321343 is about to leave the very long up platform working the 10.05 Clacton-on-Sea to Liverpool Street.

90003, LE 09.30 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P16), Colchester station
90003 'Rędwald of East Anglia' propels the 09.30 Liverpool Street to Norwich out of Colchester. On this occasion, the uniform set of Abelio stock is spoilt by the loco. that remains in its older livery! The blue sky belies the fact that it was a chilly and windy early spring day

360119, LE 10.35 Colchester Town-London Liverpool Street (2F27), Colchester station
360119 makes its first stop at Colchester after leaving Colchester Town with the 10.35 to London Liverpool Street. These Desios were introduced in 2003. The initial design incorporated inter-connecting doors but the HSE intervened very late into the design process as they were unhappy with the driver's view so this feature was abandoned.

82139, LE 10.00 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P18), Colchester station
DVT 82139 leads the 10.00 Liverpool Street to Norwich 1P18 service into Colchester station. Another set of stock showing that the refurbishment of the Mk. III coaching stock was in the process of taking place with one of the of the remaining National Express coaches third in the consist spoiling the look of the set.

321361, LE 10.00 Walton-on-the-Naze-Colchester (2F29), Colchester station
321361 sits at Colchester's bay platform having arrived with the 10.00 from Walton-on-the-Naze. This highly successful design was created by BREL at York who built the units in the late 1980s. Their future is now uncertain as new stock is soon to be introduced.

The 10.00 1P18 service from London Liverpool Street to Norwich is pushed out of Colchester station by an immaculate 90007 'Sir John Betjeman'. This name was previously carried by 86229 until its withdrawal and storage.

321319, LE 11.00 Walton-on-the-Naze-Colcehster (2F35), Great Bentley station
321319 arrives at Great Bentley with the 11.00 Walton-on-the-Naze to Colchester local service. Notice the uneven platform, work was being undertaken to improve the station and lots of resurfacing was being carried out by orange-clad contractors.

Tickets, Northampton-Great-Bentley
My split ticket from Northampton to Great Bentley. At least it covered my journey on the tube from Euston to Liverpool Street.
