31401 & 31422, 12.08 Bristol Temple Meads-Weymouth, Near Freshford ST797600
Double-headed action in the Avon Valley on a Sunday lunchtime! The 12.08 Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth is lead by 31401 and 31422. The train is seen between Freshford (in the background) and Avoncliff. To my right up at the top of the field is the Kennet and Avon canal and behind the embankment carrying the railway is the River Avon.

43121, 11.00 Weston-super-Mare-London Paddington, Avoncliff station
Diversions through the Avon Valley were pretty frequent when engineering works closed the GWML. This was the case here at Avoncliff with a class 43 HST passing the diminutive halt with the 11.00 Weston-super-mare to Paddington. HST guru Kevin Daniel is pretty sure that this power car is 43121. This is because it was one of only two that did not carry set numbers the other one being 43120. As 43120 was receiving a 'B' exam. at St. Philips Marsh on this particular Sunday that only leaves 43121 on this service. Depending on the nature of the diversion, the HST could have taken one of two routes when it reached Bradford Junction, some five miles from here. It could take the now lifted north chord and travel via Melksham back to the GWML at Thingley Junction or, alternatively, it could go further to Westbury and take the little used chord from Blatchbridge to Heywood Junction and then proceed to London along the Berks. and Hants. route. In this image, the River Avon can be seen to the right with the old mill and the weir. Notice the mist hanging around in the valley on this chilly early afternoon.
