Class 101 DMU, unidentified Whitby-Middlesborough, Whitby station
In 1978 Whitby station remained fairly large with most of it un-used. It many original features such as enamel signs and retained its mechanical signalling. Here, a class 101 DMU waits to leave with a Middlesborough train. Until 1953 the station boasted an overall roof but British Railways sought to remove it and replaced it with the awnings shown here. After continual rationalisation the station was reduced to just one platform, the one on the left in this image. That was until 2014 when the platform the DMU is at (two) was reopened for use by the North Yorkshire Railway to operate their extended steam services from Grosmont.
