The winter of 1978 was one of several particularly harsh ones during the late 1970s and early 1980s. I always tried to get out and take some pictures whatever the weather and with it being half term, I decided on a trip to Bristol to get some pictures in the snowy conditions. I think that I took the 264 bus from home to Bath followed by a return train trip onwards from Bath to Bristol Temple Meads.

47104, unidentified up working, Bath Spa station
47104 arrives into Bath Spa station with an unidentified up working. As there was some weather related disruption on this day, the identification of workings was tricky. However, the restaurant car located directly behind the loco. may indicate that it originated somewhere in the west country as this was a feature of their formations. Apologies for the motion blur but the Exa camera's maximum shutter speed of 1/150 sec. was pretty useless. What is also of interest are the cars in the station car park, the most recognisable being the white Mk. I Capri with a natty vinyl roof!

50049, unidentified London Paddingtin-Bristol Temple Meads working, Bath Spa station
50049 remains unnamed and is seen arriving into Bath Spa with an unidentified down working. I took this train to Bristol to continue my session of winter photography. The thing that strikes you about the picture is the total lack of anybody in it! It may well have been a wintery day that affects passenger numbers but to see nobody on the platforms at 10.15 on a busy station like Bath seems odd.

50002, unidentified up working, Bristol Temple Meads station
50002 waits at Bristol Temple Meads to leave with an unidentified up working. The weather conditions had caused some problems with the timetable and this meant that most services were difficult to identify. 50002 is still with us having survived into preservation. At the time of writing, it is undergoing a protracted restoration at the South Devon Railway.

31416 & class 47, unidentified down working, Bristol Temple Meads station
Some sort of incident had occurred to cause this event to happen; I suspect that it was weather related! An unidentified class 47 leads 31416 into Bristol Temple Meads with a down service. Another quiet scene at Bristol with no other people present on the platform, not even any other spotters and this was a popular spot with them due to the number of BRUTE trolleys left around due to its proximity to the Royal Mail conveyor. Apologies for the motion blur in this image, the Exa camera was struggling due to its maximum 1/150th shutter speed.

1125, unidentified Portsmouth Harbour-Bristol Temple Meads working, Bristol Temple Meads station
The snow is beginning to melt from the platforms at Bristol Temple Meads as a Southern Region DEMU arrives with a Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol working. It's 85 reporting number indicates a Portsmouth Harbour to Southampton or Romsey stopper working. By 1978 these English Electric powered units were not as common as they had been on these services, so Is suspect that the weather had a hand to play in this working. I was lucky enough to take this unit as my return train back to Bath a little later in the day.

50003, up parcels working, Bristol Temple Meads station
50003 takes the centre road through Bristol Temple Meads with an unidentified up parcels working. Due to the inclement weather, there were a number of odd workings and this was another example. Class 50s on parcel workings were not common so I suspect that the loco. was called on due to the unavailability of a suitable class 47 or 31.
