73. 5Q66 scrap unit move-05.11.18

I escaped from work for a while at lunchtime to catch an unusual move through Northampton. Coming off-lease, two class 313 EMUs were being dragged from Ilford to Kingsbury for scrapping. After nearly thirty years in service, the class 315s made for an unusual site being dragged by a class 37 through the Northamptonshire countryside!

66069, 09.27 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45), Wilsons Crossing
The daily and regular as clockwork 6M45 'bottled water train' takes the rising gradient out of Northampton past Wilson's Crossing. This working is the 09.27 Dollands Moor to Daventry railfreight terminal that is only a short distance away from this spot. After a miserable start to the day, the sun had come out and it was a pleasantly warm early November afternoon.

66592, 07.50 Felixstowe North-Lawley Street (4M94), Wilsons Crossing
A slightly wider view at Wilson's Crossing near to Kingsthorpe just to the north of Northampton. The image shows 66592 'Johnson Stevens Agencies' leading the 07.50 Felixstowe to Lawley Street Freightliner. This largely rural scene is set to change dramatically over the coming few years. Only the previous week to this picture being recorded, it was announced that Northamptonshire Planners has given approval to a huge housing development of some 3 000 homes to cover the fields in this area.

350114, LN 12.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W14, 1L), Wilsons Crossing
350114 drifts past Wilson's Crossing to the north of Northampton with the 12.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston service. Following the complete removal of lineside vegetation a couple of years ago, this view was opened up if spoilt by the installation of the dreaded palisade fencing. However, note that various shrubs are no re-growing again and the scene will soon return to type.

37800, 315846 & 315845, 05.22 Ilford EMUD-Kingsbury Sidings (5Q66), Wilsons Crossing
Any train heading for Kingsbury is only going there for one reason; this one is no exception! 37800 'Cassiopeia' leads a pair of off-lease TfL Rail class 315s for scrapping. The leading unit is 315846 followed by 315845 previously named 'Herbie Woodward'. The whole train looks, considering its fate, rather smart in the autumn sunshine as it passes Wilson's Crossing to the north of Northampton running, by this stage over one hundred minutes late.

37800, 315846 & 315845, 05.22- Ilford EMUD-Kingsbury Sidings, Wilsons Crossing
315845, formally 'Herbie Woodward', and 315846 are dragged by 37800 'Cassiopeia' on their final journey from Ilford to Kingsbury for scrapping. After doing nearly thirty years of service around London these BREL (York) built EMUs are being replaced by new stock on the East London Lines. The train is seen heading away from Wilson's Crossing close to the Kingsthorpe area of Northampton.

350375, LN 12.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W13, 4L), Wilsons Crossing
Looking different in its new London NorthWestern livery, 350375 passes Wilson's Crossing north of Northampton with the 12.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. The future of this flat foot crossing is under constant review. With the announcement of a huge housing development that will cover the fields in this area, I suspect that a footbridge or tunnel will be provided at this spot.

66537, 09.12 Felixstowe-North Ditton (4M63), Wilsons Crossing
The 4M63 09.12 Felixstowe to Ditton Freightliner takes the up grade past Wilson's Crossing near Northampton. In the background the spire of Kingsthorpe Village's St. John the Baptist's church. The field to the right may well be sown with its last ever crop as permission had just been granted for a huge house development to cover it and the surrounding area.
