As there was engineering works on the lines out to coast in preparation for next year's re-signalling, whilst my wife and son undertook some shopping in Norwich, I spent a little time at the station.

156412, LE 09.44 Sheringham-Norwich (2S09, RT), Sheringham station
Compared to the North Norfolk Railway's preserved station, just over the road behind the train, Sheringham's Network Rail station is diminutive and somewhat lacking in facilities! 156412 stands at the two carriage platform with the 09.44 to Norwich. My wife, son and I took this train all the way.

37716, 37419 & 37218, stabled, Norwich station
A gathering of veteran English Electric engines stabled at Norwich. 37716, 37419 'Carl Haviland 1954 - 2012' and 37216 are all seeing no use working the fabled trains to the coast for Greater Anglia as all the lines were closed due to engineering works. These works were in preparation for next year's complete re-signalling.

37716, 37419 & 37218, stabled, Norwich station
Due to the complete closure of all the lines out to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, the DRS class 37s that Greater Anglia hire in for use on the 'coastal trains' are seen sitting in the sidings next to Norwich station with no work. From left to right are 37717 'Carl Haviland 1954 - 2012', 37419 and 27218.

90008, LE 15.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P47, 2L), Norwich station
As the driver has not arrived to his train yet, the tail lights are still showing red even though it's a short time before departure. 90008 'The East Anglian' stands at Norwich waiting to leave with the 15.00 to Liverpool Street.

158806, EM 14.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R98, 33L), Norwich station
I quite like these class 158 units (and their 159 cousins) but I am not sure that I would want to do a journey right across the country from Liverpool to Norwich in one? 158806 leaves Norwich with the 14.57 to Lime Street. Something obviously went wrong at some point during its journey as it arrived 33 minutes late into Liverpool.

158813, 09.52 Liverpool Lime Street-Norwich (1L08, 18L), Norwich station
158813 arrives into Norwich station after completing its five hour journey from Liverpool where it left at 09.52. A two-car DMU is a little disappointing on train like this, in years past, it would have been a rake of comfy Mk. I or Mk. II stock hauled by a class 31; how things have changed!

90015, 15.30 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P49, 1E), Norwich station
90015 is ready to leave with the 15.30 to London Liverpool Lime Street. The Greater Anglia livery that the class 90s and the stock carry is bright and smart but I suspect that the cleaning staff have to work hard to keep it looking good.

153306 & class 153, 15.30 Norwich Crown Point-Norwich ECS (5S24), Norwich station
Two class 153 single car DMUs, with 153306 leading, arrive into Norwich station having made the short journey from Crown Point as 5S24. On a drab autumn day, the Greater Anglia livery certainly stands out and brightens things up a bit!

90014, GA 16.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P51, 10E), Norwich station
90014 'Norfolk & Norwich Festival' was named at this station in May 2006. It is seen at the head of the 1P51 16.00 to London Liverpool Street. Things will change here in the coming couple of years as the new stock is introduced seeing the end of these loco. hauled services.

Nameplate, 90012, 14.00 London-Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P34, 3L), Norwich station
The nameplate of 90012 'Royal Anglian Regiment' is seen on the side of the loco. at Norwich station about to head to London working the 14.00 to Liverpool Street. The locomotive was named in a short ceremony at Liverpool Street station in November 2007.

90012, 14.00 London Liverpool Street-Norwich (1P34, 3L) & 90014, 16.00 Norwich-London Liverpool Street (1P51, 10E), Norwich station
90012 'Royal Anglian Regiment' has arrived at Norwich and terminated with the 14.00 from Liverpool Street. Next to it, 90014 'Norfolk & Norwich Festival' is ready to leave with the 16.00 1P51 service to Liverpool Street. The 90s have been the mainstay of these services for some years now but things are set to change with the introduction of units on the line to replace the loco. hauled services....progress, I am not at all sure?

153322, stabled, Norwich station
One of Greater Anglia's single-car units, 153322, sits stabled under the overall roof of Norwich station. I like Norwich station, it's smart and, apart from the poor toilets, it has good facilities. Unfortunately, barriers have been installed so permission has be sought to get on the platforms.

156417, LE 16.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S26, RT), Norwich station
Our train back to Sheringham is seen standing at Norwich station. 156417 is waiting to work the 2S26 16.45 departure, a journey that takes just over an hour including a reversal at Cromer.

156417, LE 16.45 Norwich-Sheringham (2S26, RT), Cromer station
Cromer station is a shadow of its past. It is now a single platform with a line either side. Trains enter from the west and then depart eastwards to either Sheringham or Norwich with the lines diverging some mile or so out of the station. 156417 has just brought my family and I from Norwich as the driver walks down his train ready to drive the final leg of the journey to Sheringham with a stop at West Runton.

Tickets, Sheringham-Norwich-Sheringham
It was actually cheaper for us to buy three adult group save tickets rather than use our railcards for our return journey to Norwich from Sheringham. Full marks to the train guard for identifying this option thus saving us a few pounds.
