After a full-on day of shopping and sightseeing my wife and son went back to the hotel to have rest before going out for our evening meal. I called in at SMN station for an hour or so in the heat of the early evening. I was able to wander about with impunity getting no suspicious looks from railway staff or the armed station security staff. Very different to how one is made to feel at a major (or not so major for that matter!) UK station.

502.068, unidentified working, Florence SMN station
A Minuetto class 502 number 502.068 sits in the bay platform on the far side of Florence SNM station with an unidentified working. Despite there modern looks, these DMUs are coming up for twenty years old. They have now settled down and are offering a good service after a poor start with all sorts of software issues marring their introduction.

445.1098, 17.55 Florence SMN-Borgo SL (11993), Florence SMN station
There are 150 of these 445 diesels in service on the Italian network. They are relatively slow with a maximum speed of 81mph attained from their 1 900Hp Fiat supercharged engines. However, probably due to that supercharger, they make a great noise as this one was as it leaves Florence SMN station with the 17.55 to Borgo San Lorenzo that is about twenty kilometres north east of Florence.

A side view of 445.1116 as it waits at Florence SMN station waiting to leave with the 18.55 commuter service to Borgo San Lorenzo. These elderly and somewhat (on paper) underpowered diesels make a heck of a racket. This is largely down to the fact that they use supercharger to provide them with a bit more power that are notoriously noisy in service.

464.506 has just arrived into Florence SMN station and will wait for sometime and then work the 19.18 to the coastal town of Viarggio. I saw no railway enthusiasts in Italy apart from the two boys standing by the class 464 who were eagerly taking videos of trains and appeared to to actually be collecting numbers!
