A work trip to Halifax by train to collect a new car bought for a customer. On my own this time with a super drive back in a nice new VW Polo!

350119, LM 06.35 Northampton-Crewe (2U21, 1L), Northampton station
350119 sist at the end of Northampton remote bay platform with the 06.35 to Crewe. I travelled on this train as far as Stoke-on-Trent.

220019, XC 07.27 Manchester Piccadilly-Bournmouth (1O08, 1L), Stoke-on-Trent station
220019 arrives at Stoke-on-Trent station in the early morning sun with the 07.27 Manchester Piccadilly to Bournemouth. I like Stoke station, it has been well restored and has a nice atmosphere with the light making its way easily through the glazed overall roof.

350128, LM 07.55 Crewe-London Euston (1U22, RT), Stoke-on-Trent station
350128 slows for its stop at Stoke with the 07.55 Crewe to London Euston. This train is a slow 'all stations' train on this part of its journey. But, once it's at Rugby it runs 'fast' to London vying for space with Pendolinos and Voyagers.

221126, XC 07.31 Birmingham New Street-Manchester Piccadilly (1H17, 8L) & 350128, LM 07.55 Crewe-London Euston (1U22, RT), Stoke-on-Trent station
The next leg of my journey to Halifax arrives at Stoke-on-Trent station, 221126 working the 07.31 Birmingham New Street to Manchester. This train was already a little late here at Stoke making my connection tighter than I would have liked at Piccadilly. In the end, eight minutes late did force me into a run on arrival at Manchester!

185139, TP 08.22 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough (1E65, 1L), Huddersfield station
Having made the journey from Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield, I have alighted just in time to capture 185139 leaving the station. It is working the 08.22 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough and is about to cross Huddersfield Viaduct and pass the town's new Kirklees waste incinerator plant that dominates the scene

142030, stabled, Huddersfield station
142030 sits between duties in Huddersfield station's carriage sidings. Notice that it's still wearing its Northern Trains livery but that it's been de-branded.

142004, NT 10.13 Huddersfield-Sheffield (2B39, 4L), Huddersfield station
142004 waits for the road at Huddersfield station. It's about to work the 10.13 to Sheffield that will run via Penistone and Barnsley, the majority of the journey on single-line track.

150268, NT 10.15 Huddersfiled-Stalybridge (2T81, 1L) & 185123, TP 08.37 Hull-Manchester Piccadilly (1K07, 2L), Huddersfield station
As I had missed my initial train to Halifax, I spent a little time at Huddersfield station. It was a large, airy and pleasant station with good facilities. The platforms are wide meaning that it never felt crowded even though it appeared to handling a good number of passengers. Here, 150268 waits to work the local 10.15 to Stalybridge whilst 185123 arrives with the 08.37 Hull to Manchester Piccadilly.

185123, TP 08.27 Middlesborough-Manchester Airport (1P23, 3L), Huddersfield station
185123 draws into Huddersfield station working the 08.27 Middlesborough to Manchester Airport service. There is credible talk that these eleven year old units, that are just undergoing refurbishment, have an uncertain future.

144019, NT 09.44 Wakefield Westgate-Huddersfield (2O70, 1L), Huddersfield station
It looks as though the weed-killing train has not traversed the two bay platform lines at Huddersfield for sometime. This is similar to large areas of the network that suffer from a chronic lack of day-to-day maintenance. 144019 arrives with the 2O70 09.44 train from Wakefield Westgate.

144019, NT 10.31 Huddersfield-Wakefield Westagte (2O67, 1E) & 185143, TP 09.33 Manchester Airport-Middlesborough (1P22, 1E), Huddersfiled station
144019 sits in one of Huddersfield's bay platforms ready to work the 10.31 to Wakefield Westgate. Meanwhile, on the right 185143 has just arrived working the Trans Pennine 09.33 Manchester Airport to Middlesborough. Notice in the background the huge St George’s Warehouse that when it was constructed between 1873 and 1883 was the largest example in the UK. It has recently undergone a huge restoration and is now in use being divided up in to various small business units.

185114, TP 08.50 Scarborough-Liverpool Lime Street (1F84, 6L), Huddersfield station
185114 comes off Huddersfield's Viaduct and enters the station working the 08.50 Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street.

144023, NT 10.59 Huddersfield-Leeds (2J18, 2L) & 185119, TP 09.55 York-Manchester Airport (1P25, 7L), Huddersfield station
144023 sits at platform 4a of Huddersfield station about to leave with the 10.59 to Leeds. Meanwhile, 185119 is arriving at platform one with the 09.55 York to Manchester Airport.

142021, NT 10.50 Huddersfield-Leeds (2W70, RT), Huddersfield station
This was my final train of the day that took me from Huddersfield to Halifax. 142021 is seen sitting in the bay platform with the 10.50 to Leeds. Even though I don't relish a trip on a Pacer, the experience will be one from the past soon so I always make a point of doing so when the situation arrises.

Cab, 142021, NT 10.50 Huddersfield-Leeds (2W70, RT), Huddersfield station
A view not seen that often (unless you are a Northern driver that is!). The cab door of 142021 is open affording a view out of Huddersfield station. The Pacer is about to leave with the 10.50 to Leeds that I took as far as Halifax.

153324, NT 09.54 Hull-Huddersfield (2W69, 1E) & 142021, NT 10.50 Huddersfield-Leeds (2W70, RT), Halifax station
Halifax station is still largely extant but actual operations are a fraction of what they once were. There are only two platforms in use now but at least the signal box is operational. To the left, 153324 gets ready to leave working the 09.54 Hull to Huddersfield. Whilst, to the right, 142021 departs with the 10.50 Huddersfield to Leeds. I have just travelled on this train from Huddersfield.
