A trip on Bertie the Brompton to Roade Cutting to see the 5M94 class 319 unit drag. However, there were all sorts of problems on this morning both north and south and it appeared to be cancelled so I went home. However, a short time later, it was all on again so I had to dash out from home again just getting there in time!

350238, LM 09.33-Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W08, RT), Roade Cutting
Roade Cutting in high summer sees 350238 leading one of its classmates with the 09.33 Birmingham New Street to London Euston.

350107 & 350123, LM 09.54 Birmingham New Street-Northampton (2N33, RT), Roade Cutting
350107 and 350123 were both part of the initial deliveries of the class 350/1 Desiros that commenced in 2005. They entered service in a neutral and unbranded grey colour with doomed Central and Silverlink Trains. Only when London Midland took over these two franchises did they emerge in their familiar green livery. The two units are seen passing through Roade Cutting working the 09.54 Euston to Birmingham New Street.

390135, VT 09.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A14, 5L), Roade Cutting
390135 'City of Lancaster' passes through Roade Cutting working the 09.35 Manchester to Euston. I love spending time at this spot in Roade Cutting, there's no traffic, a few dog walkers, great views of regular trains and there are usually red kites soaring above.

390156, VT 10.40 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H74), Roade Cutting
350156 'Stockport 170' passes northwards through Roade Cutting with the 10.40 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. 35156 was the first of the eleven-car Pendolinos into service in April 2012. During the winter of 2013 it was named to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the opening of Stockport station.

66560, Lawley Street-Felixstowe North, Roade Cutting
Freightliner's 66560 hauls a load of flat wagons with no boxes in view (I do not recall if there were actually any loaded on it at all). The electronic timetables had problems on this morning, I believe that this working was the late running Lawley Street to Felixstowe North, if anybody can update this information I would be grateful.

350370, LM 10.53 Rugby-London Euston (Cancelled Crewe-Rugby) (1U24), Roade Cutting
Something had obviously gone wrong further north as this service was supposed to have started its journey at Crewe. However, on this morning, 350370 started from Rugby as the 10.53 to Euston running as 1U24. Not far off its advertised time it is seen here passing through Roade Cutting.

390126, VT 08.47 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A15), Roade Cutting
At the northern end of Roade Cutting the fast and slow routes begin a more determined separation since leaving London. The fast lines curve sharply off towards Rugby via the Weedon Loop and the slow lines to the right head off towards Northampton. In this view, the fabled 'bird cage', as it is known, can be seen over the slow lines. This was installed following a collapse of the cutting in 1890, it was subsequently raised to accommodate the electrification wires in the early 1960s. 390126 'Virgin Enterprise' passes through with the 08.47 Liverpool Lime Street to Euston.

350118, LM 10.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W09), Roade Cutting
350118 passes the northern end of Roade Cutting with the 10.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street. You can see that the slow lines are just beginning to drop away from the fast lines. This marks the point where the two lines diverge to go via either Weedon or Northampton to join each other again at Hillmorton Junction just south of Rugby.

350109, LM 10.46 London Euston-Rugby (Cancelled Rugby-Crewe) (1U31, 17L), Roade Cutting
350109 takes the down fast through Roade Cutting with the 10.46 Euston to Crewe working. Like its up counterpart earlier in the morning, there was a problem somewhere that caused this service to terminate at Rugby and that was 17 minutes late too. I never did get to the bottom of what caused all the IT issues on this particular morning and why trains were so late or even being altered so much; I hope that the passengers were better informed?

350125 & 350110, LM 11.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1W11, 7L), site of Roade station
the 11.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street formation passes the site of Roade station. It is being worked by 350125 and 350110. The gravel area in the foreground was once occupied by several sidings that served the village and the adjacent Pianoforte factory.

37884, 319423 & 319430, 10.42 Hornsey-Long Marston (5M94), site of Raode station
Running late now but, at least still running! 37884 tows off-lease 319423 and 319430 as the 10.42 Hornsey Depot to Long Marston. The 5M94 working was a regular one that involved the dragging of the 319s not selected for further use with Northern for storage pending a decision upon their future. The train is seen passing the site of Roade station.
