A work trip to Liverpool with my boss involved travelling up via train to Liverpool South Parkway and then a local trip on Merseyrail to Sandhills. After collecting a car, we drove back to Northamptonshire.

66127, 01.28 London Gateway-Trafford Park (4L56), Northampton station
In the early morning light 66127 passes through Northampton station with the overnight 4L56 01.28 London Gateway to Trafford Park Freightliner. The picture is taken from one of Northampton's newly refurbished north facing bay platforms.

350238, LM 06.35 Northampton-Crewe (2U21, 2L), Northampton station
A study of practicality rather than beauty! These Desiros have been a totally successful design but one that will win no prizes for their aesthetic appeal. In its London Midland livery, 350238 sits in one of the bay platforms to leave with the 06.35 to Crewe. My boss and I took this train as far as Stafford travelling via the Trent Valley.

221129, XC 07.07 Manchester Piccadilly-Bristol Temple Meads (1V45, 2E), Stafford station
The early morning brightness had given way to very overcast and dull weather by the time we got to Stafford. Here, 221129 arrives at Stafford with the 07.07 Manchester Piccadilly to Bristol Temple Meads. I could think of better ways to make this cross-country 1V45 journey rather than in a Voyager. I find them cramped, noisy and all too often, hopelessly over-crowded.

221135, XC 07.31 Birmingham New Street-Manchester-Piccadilly (1H17, RT), Stafford station
221135 pauses at Stafford working the 07.31 Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly. This is a relatively short Cross Country working that travels under the wires for the whole of its 81 mile journey, I have to question the merits of running a diesel unit on this working?

350246, LM 07.01 Walsall-Liverpool-Lime Street (1F33, 3L), Stafford station

Allerton Junction Signal Box (BR, 1960)
Allerton Junction signal box is seen from the linking footbridge at Liverpool South Parkway station. This is a standard British Railways designed box dating from 1960. It's built at a busy junction just west of what is now Liverpool South Parkway station. It is likely that this will be decommissioned, along with the few remaining Merseyside boxes, when the re-modelling at Lime Street is completed next year.

507010, ME 09.06 Hunts Cross-Southport (2S13, RT), Liverpool South Parkway station
Veteran Mersey Rail EMU 507010 arrives at Liverpool South Parkway station with the 09.06 Hunt's Cross to Southport working. My boss and I took this train right under Liverpool city centre as far as Sandhills station.

507018, ME 09.05 Ormskirk-Liverpool Central (2G30, 2L), Sandhills station
The elevated station at Sandhills serves the commercial district located in the old dockland area to the north of Liverpool city centre. It was a pretty bleak station up to when it was virtually re-bulit from the bottom up opening again in 2008. 507018 waits to depart with the 09.05 Ormskirk to Liverpool Central.
