A few hours out with Andy to the MML not far from our respective homes. I nipped over to pick Andy up in my Combo van and we headed the short distance to just north of Bedford.

222016, EM 09.26 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F17, 1E), Oakley TL013539
222016 is seen passing Oakley just north of Bedford on the MML forming the 09.26 London St. Pancras to Sheffield. The picture is taken with the help of a ladder as Network Rail have installed a huge number of replacement bridges as part of the forthcoming electrification that have absurdly high parapets. Behind the train is the former Oakley station building, opened by the Midland Railway in 1857 and closed by British Railways in 1958.

222015 '175 Years of Derby's Railways 1839 - 2014' heads north past Oakley in Bedfordshire working the 09.29 London St. Pancras to Nottingham. Note the piling in the ground just in front of the colour light signal. This will be where one of the electrification masts will sit that will support the associated paraphernalia that will ruin yet another shot of the railway!

222010, EM 09.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B26, 3L), Oakley TL013539
222010 just catches a little spring sunshine as it speed south past Oakley in Bedfordshire working the 09.05 Nottingham to London St. Pancras. Network Rail have had to rebuild and raise many structures on this line to accommodate the electrification paraphernalia but one that requires no work is the tall Highfiled Bridge in the background!

222101, EM 08.49 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C27, 2L), Highfield Bridge, Oakley
Highfield Bridge in the Bedfordshire village of Oakley offers a superb and uninterrupted view to the north. This scene will change dramatically soon with the 'on-off-on' electrification of the MML now taking place (at least as far as Kettering and Corby). Before the scene is spoilt, 222101 heads south forming the 08.49 Sheffield to London St. Pancras. 222101 was one of the four that were operated by Hull Trains that have now passed to EMT.

222014, EM 09.49 London St. Pancras-Crickelwood via Kettering ECS (5M17), Highfield Bridge, Oakley
Highfied Bridge in Oakley, Bedfordshire, offers a commanding view of the MML in both directions. In this view, looking south, 222014 works an unusual empty coaching stock move. The 09.49 St. Pancras to Cricklwood ECS should be a journey of about six miles. However, not if the train goes via kettering! For some reason unknown to me, this ECS move takes in an unnecessary one hundred and thirty mile diversion; can anybody shed any light on why this train makes this regular journey?

222001, EM 09.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F21, 2E), Highfield Bridge, Oakley
222001 'The Entrepreneur Express' passes Oakley in Bedfordshire forming the 09.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield. The picture is taken from the lofty heights of Highfield Bridge in the village. Whilst the bridge offers great views of the line, it is a little exposed and this spring day was not a warm one and I was a little underdressed and was pleased to move to the next spot!

43066, EM 09.32 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B28, 2L), Highfield Bridge, Oakley
A sight for sore eyes! East Midlands Trains have done a smashing job painting and maintaining their HST fleet. 43066 leads the 09.32 Nottingham to St. Pancras service past Oakley in Bedfordshire taken from Highfield Bridge. 43066 was an Eastern Region power car introduced in 1978 as part of set 254006.

222006 'The Carbon Cutter' crosses Radwell viaduct with the 09.29 Nottingham to St. Pancras. There are actually two viaducts here separated by a short gap. The parapets of the second viaduct, that carries the up and down slow lines, can be seen standing slightly higher in the background.

222023, EM 10.26 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F23,1E), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
222023 is just about to cross Radwell viaduct in Bedfordshire with the 10.26 St. Pancreas to Sheffield. In order to take a pan shot at this location, I had to have the camera ready and to the eye as I had no warning of it emerging from a low cutting to the right!

222102, EM 10.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D24, RT), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
222102 crosses the low Radwell Viaduct that in itself crosses the River Great Ouse in the foreground. The Meridian is working the 10.29 St. Pancras to Nottingham train. The Great Ouse has its source at Syresham near to Silverstone and its mouth is into The Wash at Kings Lyn making it, with a length of 143 miles, one of the UK's longest rivers.

222009, EM 10.05 Nottingham-London St.Pancras-Nottingham (1B31, 2L), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
Andy takes his picture of 222009 as it crosses Radwell Viaduct in Bedfordshire forming the 10.05 Nottingham to London St. Pancras. The viaduct was constructed my the Midland Railway to elevate the line above the meadows in the foreground that are flooded frequently by the River Great Ouse just in front on Andy.

222011, EM 09.49 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1C32, 2L), Radwell Viaduct TL008569
Of the two swans making their way up the River Great Ouse, one appears interested in 222011 whereas the other in somewhat nonplussed! The Meridian is crossing Radwell Viaduct working the 09.49 Nottingham to London St. Pancras 1C32 service.
