Andy and me went over to the Midland Mainline for the Cathedrals Express and the 5Q57 Electrostar drag. We chose a spot that we had visited before but it has since been made far more difficult to use as the bridge has been completely rebuilt with huge and completely unnecessary parapets for the forthcoming electrification.

222016, EM 06.37 London St.Pancras-York (1F05, 3L), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
222016 begins its climb to Sharnbrook Summit forming the 06.37 London St. Pancras to York. The scene has been brightened up a bit by the profusion of blossom on the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) behind the train.

222023, 06.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B11, 3L), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
222023 gathers speed down Sharnbrook Bank working the 06.05 Nottingham to St. Pancras. This shot used to be easy, the bridge had a nice low parapet and was a lovely quiet spot where a footpath crosses the railway. However, Network Rail has rebuilt the bridge with enormous parapets that can only be surmounted by the use of a ladder making the whole experience less pleasurable.

47237, outward leg of The Cathedrals Express, Kettering-Bristol Temple Meads (with 45699 from Southall) (1Z45), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
West Coast's 47237 leads the outward leg of The cathedrals Express that started out just a short distance down the line at Kettering. Its destination was Bristol with it being steam hauled from Southall by 45699 'Galatea'. The whole train ran as 1Z45 all the way to the West Country.

47760, outward leg of The Cathedrals Express, Kettering Bristol Temple Meads (1Z45), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
West Coast Railway's livery is not the finest on the network! It is drab and does not photograph well, this situation is exacerbated by the grey and early morning light as seen here. 47760 brings up the rear of The Cathedrals Express that started out at Kettering and finished at Bristol having been steam hauled from Southall. The train is seen on the up fast just passing Sharnbrook north of Bedford on the MML

222010, EM 06.52 London St.Pancras-Nottingham (1D06, RT), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
222010 works the 06.52 from London St. Pancras to Nottingham working past Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire. The actual junction of the same name can be seen just before the bridge in the middle distance. Prior to re-signalling in 1981, there was a signal box situated just beyond the bridge.

43075, 06.32 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B13, RT), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
The sight of an East Midlands HST brightens up a dreary morning! 43075 leads the 06.32 Nottingham to St. Pancras down Sharnbrook Bank on the approach to the junction at the bottom. 43075 was an Eastern Region power car delivered during 1978 as part of set 254010. I probably would have cursed it back in the '70s on the ECML as it was set to oust the beloved Deltics, how things change!

222003, EM 06.21 Derby-London St. Pancras (1C12, 6L), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
Under a dramatic sky 222003 'Tornado' comes down the bank towards Sharnbrook Junction working the 06.21 Derby to London St. Pancras. Even through Andy and I were in the morning sun, the huge bank of cloud was approaching fast from the north west.

222001, EM 07.10 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D09, RT), Sharnbrook Junction Tl002598
With the Blackthorn in full blossom 222001 'The Entrepreneur Express' passes Sharnbrook Junction working the 07.10 London St. Pancras to Nottingham. The train has just started its climb of Sharnbrook Bank, one it takes with considerable ease but one that does make the vibration and noise aboard more noticeable; these are not the most refined units on the network!
