Once again the Cumbrian Mountain Express was utilising its usual path up the West Coast Mainline leaving London Euston at 07.10 and heading for Carlisle. It was an extremely cold morning but this did not stop me venturing out in my trusty Combo van! A little later there was also the class 378 stock move to see, again on the WCML.

350236, LN 06.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1Y04, 1E), Hungate End SP784465 The sun has just risen on what was a bitterly cold morning as London Northwestern 350236 passes Hungate End with the 06.14 From Birmingham to London Euston. This location is about a mile south of Hanslope Junction and crossovers between Northampton and Milton Keynes.
390117, VT 06.27 Wolverhampton-London Euston (1B03, 7L), Hungate End SP784465 390117 'Virgin Prince' speeds through the freezing cold early morning air as it passes Hungate End just near to Hanslope Junction on the lower WCML. This Pendolino was working the 1B03 06.27 Wolverhampton to London Euston. Notice that 390117 has a recently fitted replacement drawbar cover with yellow paint that is a very poor match! To get to this location requires quite a walk down a track for about a mile as there is no vehicle access allowed. Keywords: 390117 1B03, 7L Hungate End SP784465
Class 390, VT 07.20 London Euston-Manchester (1H09, 5L), Hungate End SP784465 With the rising sun reflecting off its side, a Virgin Pendolino heads north with the 07.20 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. It is difficult getting good spots for early morning trains on the lower WCML in sunny conditions as is illustrated here! This situation is exacerbated in winter when the sun is that much lower! 86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 07.10 London Euston-Carlisle (1Z86), Hungate End SP784465 Not my finest shot of 86259 'Peter Pan/Les Ross' working the Cumbrian Mountain Express railtour from Euston to Carlisle. However, because of the sheer effort I put into getting it because of the extreme cold I am going to include it! Normally, the wires would not intrude in this shot; I have taken many here before. Class 390, VT 09.40 London Euston-Manchester (1H64, RT), Victoria Bridge After seeing the Cumbrian Mountain Express earlier, I had time to nip home, have some breakfast and defrost myself! I then nipped out to Victoria Bridge and saw this Pendolino working the 09.40 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. Class 221s, VT 08.18 Shrewsbury-London Euston (1B11, 4L), Victoria Bridge Turning the previous way to the last photograph completely changes the lighting conditions! With one of Roade's characteristic water towers in full view two class 221 Voyagers race southwards forming the 1B11 08.18 Shrewsbury to London Euston. 37608 & 375826, 04.42 Chaddesden-Ramsgate EMUD (5Q58), Victoria Bridge. Europhoenix's 37608 'Andromeda' is seen passing Victoria Bridge near to Roade on the WCML hauling Electrostar 378826 back to Ramsagte after overhaul at Derby.
