There were some tantalising small holes in the cloud to the east but none allowed the sun to come through to give some much-needed light here at Milton crossing just north of Roade cutting. Hauling some of West Coast Railway's newly acquired compliant Mk. II stock 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' heads north with the outward leg of The Cumbrian Coast Express that left London at 06.37 heading for Carlisle. On arrival at Carlisle, the Class 86 would hand over to Black 5 44871. Incidentally, 35508, the Mk. I support coach attached to the rear of the train had an alarming wheel flat knocking its way past me here in Northamptonshire doing nothing for it or the track. On arrival at Cranforth later in the day prior to the 1Z87 heading south, it was detached from the train.
